DOT condemns Slovak tourist’s slay in Boracay

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Tourism (DOT) has condemned the killing of a Slovak tourist on Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan.
“The DOT is concerned with the recent incident involving a Slovak tourist on Boracay Island. Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the victim,” the DOT said in a statement sent to journalists on Friday.
The decomposing body of 23-year-old Michaela Mickova was found at an abandoned chapel in Barangay Balabag on Wednesday.
The victim bore a stab wound in the abdomen. She was reported missing on Monday by a Filipina friend.
Although the DOT described the incident as an isolated case, it said such actions are not tolerated and have no place in the country.
The agency urged the Department of the Interior and Local Government as well as the police to tighten security in key tourist destinations.
“As we wait for the result of the investigation, the DOT reaffirms its dedication to preserving Boracay’s reputation as a premier tourist destination,” the agency said.
Boracay is a world-class tourist destination known for its white sand beaches and active night life.
