PANGASINAN, Philippines — Afternoon classes in public and private schools in some towns and a city were suspended yesterday after this province was placed under wind signal No. 1 due to Tropical Depression Gener.

As of 2 p.m., the towns of Bautista, Binmaley, Bayambang, Calasiao, Mangaldan, Manaoag, Lingayen, Pozorrubio, San Jacinto, San Manuel and Sta. Barbara as well as Dagupan City suspended afternoon classes up to high school.

The local governments of Bautista and Pozorrubio also canceled classes in all levels today.

Lingayen town also canceled classes from kindergarten to Grade 12 as well as Alternative Learning System due to the wind signal.

Fishermen were told not to venture out to sea due to the bad weather.

Meanwhile, in Negros Occidental, the number of families staying in evacuation centers due to heavy rains spawned by the southwest monsoon increased to 2,796 as of Sunday.

Aside from the evacuees, 118 more families displaced by the bad weather are staying with their relatives.

The provincial disaster risk reduction and management council said the monsoon affected 15,583 families composed of 47,811 people.

The monsoon destroyed P7.3 million worth of agricultural crops in 11 local government units, while losses to the fishery sector reached P632,083 as of Saturday.

A teenager was reported missing on Sunday in Barangay Maricalum in Sipalay City.

The Philippine Coast Guard is investigating reports that tons of limestone ore have spilled off the coast of Maricalum.
