CIDG nabs 2 women for selling old Peruvian bills

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested two women for selling demonetized Peruvian money worth P200 million  during a sting operation in Pasig City Monday afternoon.

CIDG Chief Director Benjamin Magalong said that the detectives of the CIDG Anti-Fraud and Commercial Crimes Unit nabbed Nemie Zamora and Ma. Carlita Marcantonio during an entrapment operation at a coffee shop in Pasig City, following a complaint by one of their victims, Eliza Keys,in November.

Magalong said that Keys was duped into buying 98 pieces of 10,000 Peruvian intis denominations worth P8 million, in exchange of P60,000.

When Keys brought the money to the Central Bank of the Philippines for examination, she discovered that the Peruvian intis have long been demonetized and devalued by the Peruvian government in July 1991.

Keys said that the two women were asking for additional P3 million in exchange of four bundles of Peruvian intis amounting to P200 million, prompting her to seek police assistance.

The two suspects are now facing estafa.
