Ermita: ARMM polls to push through on Aug. 8
June 3, 2005 | 12:00am
The elections in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) will push through as scheduled on Aug. 8, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.
Ermita said both chambers of Congress will not be able to act on the proposed postponement of the regional polls due to lack of time since they will adjourn their first regular session on June 10.
"While there was talk before that there could be a possibility of a postponement, during the LEDAC (Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council) meeting we were told by the Senate President (Franklin Drilon) and Speaker (Jose de Venecia) that it was too close for comfort. They cannot promise they can pass the postponement resolution before June 10 so (the elections) will push through on Aug. 8," Ermita told reporters the other day.
ARMM covers Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Marawi City.
While there were some local leaders and congressmen who wanted the ARMM elections postponed, Ermita said they should abide by the existing law.
He said the campaign period starts in the third week of June or 45 days before election day.
Ermita said Basilan Rep. Gerry Salapuddin, who is running for ARMM governor along with incumbent Gov. Parouk Hussin and other candidates, is considered on leave when the campaign starts and may go back to his post as House Deputy Speaker in case he loses.
He said Malacañangs "free zone" policy, meaning it will not support any candidate, still stands unless there are intervening events that would require the Arroyo administration to support one candidate.
