Barzaga proclaimed as Cavite 4th District rep

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — Dasmariñas City mayor Jennifer Barzaga has been proclaimed as the newly elected 4th District representative of Cavite, after winning by a landslide the special election over the weekend.

She will take the seat vacated by her son Kiko who was expelled by the House of Representatives in June for disruptive and unparliamentary behavior.

Barzaga garnered 201,893 votes, or 45.12 percent of the 258,361 ballots cast during Saturday’s poll.

The district has 447,387 registered voters.

Former vice mayor Raul Rex Mangubat finished second with 30,373 votes.

The Commission on Election extended voting period by two hours, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., due to the inclement weather.

The canvassing of votes from 43 voting centers and 1,308 clustered precincts was done at the city’s arena in Barangay Burol Main, where the Comelec proclaimed Barzaga as winner at 3:21 a.m. yesterday.

Col. Ariel Red, Cavite police director, said the special election was peaceful, orderly and smooth, with no significant incident reported.
