MANILA, Philippines — A live-action spin-off movie about the evil stepsisters of Cinderella is currently in development at Disney.

The animated "Cinderella" from 1950 received the live-action treatment in 2015 with Lily James as the titular character opposite "Game of Thrones" star Richard Madden.

In that movie, the stepsisters Drisella and Anastasia were played by Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger, with Oscar-winning Cate Blanchett playing their mother, Lady Tremaine.

The planned spin-off film, aptly named "Stepsisters," will be directed by comedian Akiva Schaffer, best known as a member of The Lonely Island with Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone.

Schaffer's directorial features include "Hot Rod," "The Watch," the "Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers" remake for Disney and last year's "The Naked Gun" sequel.

Michael Montemayor will pen an original script with Schaffer doing rewrites alongside his "Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers" and "The Naked Gun" co-writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand.

Disney Live Action executive vice president Jessica Virtue will oversee production with creative executive Cady Stark. Ali Bell is producing for Party Over Here, the production company founded by The Lonely Island.

A live-action "Moana" is coming out later this year while other confirmed live-action remakes by Disney are "Tangled," "Hercules," "Lilo & Stitch" and "Cruella" sequels, a third "Maleficent" movie, and a film centered on "Beauty and the Beast" villain Gaston.
