Lovi Poe shares lessons from motherhood, difficult childbirth

I’m not sure whether Lovi Poe will still be in the country by the time this is published.
Lovi was my guest a few weeks ago on GMA 7’s “Fast Talk With Boy Abunda” for “The Talk” segment. It was her first time on the show since giving birth to Sloane, her firstborn daughter with her husband, film producer Monty Blencowe.
It was also Lovi’s first time being miles away from 11-month-old Sloane, whom she left in the US with Monty.
“She’s good, she’s great. I’m sad because it’s my first time being away from her. It’s tough,” Lovi said of flying back to the Philippines on her own.
The actress shared that the name Sloane means “warrior” because she wants her daughter to grow up knowing that she’s a fighter and a tough cookie.
If you’ve noticed, Lovi has yet to show Sloane’s face on either of their social media accounts.
“This works for us at the moment (due to the nature of the Internet) for privacy. But it’s a discussion that my husband and I are having now because eventually, I think it will be nice to share this beautiful treasure that we have. Maybe in the future, we’d probably (show her face).”
Looking back on giving birth to Sloane, Lovi revealed that she was in labor for 30 hours. She also had preeclampsia. She recalled feeling so groggy after giving birth that she initially chose not to hold her baby.
“I didn’t wanna hold her and have that first moment and not feel it fully. My husband got a little sad when I said, ‘I think not right now, maybe give it a few hours.’ Then (after) a few hours, when I saw her, it’s not like in the movies where it’s instant, but then your mother instinct, it hits you suddenly.”
She suddenly became worried about her baby and how she was going to feed her. She had plenty of questions about caring for her child, but the nurse told her to relax.
“That’s where you see the mother’s instinct; it’s so different,” she pointed out.
Lovi also felt a kind of love she herself couldn’t explain.
“This is no joke. Now I know exactly what love means. I’ve been singing many songs and have fallen in love with so many things, but this is different.”
As an actress, Lovi felt she hadn’t done justice to the mother roles she had played in the past, now that she knows what it’s really like to be a mom.
Lovi admitted that her world revolved around work when she was single.
“I was very career-oriented, which I still am. I think ambition and motherhood go well together. But right now, my priorities have changed.”
She has also learned to appreciate her mom, Rowena Moran, even more, saying that a woman truly understands and empathizes with her own mother once she becomes a mother herself.
Lovi was aware that her Instagram video had gone viral, with netizens praising her postpartum physique. In the video, Lovi showed her body transformation — from the last week of her pregnancy to her slim, toned abs two weeks after giving birth to Sloane.
Lovi humbly insisted that the video was well-lit and suggested she was simply fortunate.
“I don’t know if the years I spent in terms of investing in my body and working out helped, but good lighting really helps.”
She couldn’t deny how quickly she returned to her slim physique, but she reminded fellow mothers that her appearance should not be the standard for how mothers should look.
“We all have our ways of bouncing back, right? We have our ways, different recoveries.”
Meanwhile, Lovi is among the Filipino actors who have made their way into Hollywood through the independent film “Bad Man.”
Apart from acting, Lovi has also ventured into film production with her husband, Monty, through C’est Lovi Productions. She stars in the company’s debut film, “The Sacrifice,” a psychological thriller directed by Prime Cruz.
The film also stars Max Collins, Enchong Dee, Lav Diaz, Pokwang and Hollywood actors Louie Chapman and Timothy Granaderos.
