Robert Downey Jr. reintroduced as Marvel's Doom in new 'Avengers' trailer
MANILA, Philippines — After months of waiting, Marvel fans finally got a full-length trailer for the highly-anticipated "Avengers: Doomsday" featuring a first look at Robert Downey Jr. as big baddie Dr. Doom.
Downey was previously the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man for a decade until the character's demise in "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019.
Years of instability followed for the studio, leading to a hard pivot that had Marvel Studios and Disney enlisting the services of Downey — fresh off an Oscar win for "Oppenheimer" — once more, this time for an entirely different character.
Four teaser trailers were released earlier this year for a glimpse of what to expect in "Avengers: Doomsday": Chris Hemsworth's Thor praying to the heavens, Wakandans meeting the Fantastic Four, and the return of the X-Men and Chris Evans' Steve Rogers.
A full trailer was presented exclusively during CinemaCon last April and is likely the same preview that Marvel dropped last July 20.
The trailer opens with the disheveled logo of Xavier School, the educational institute for young mutants run by Patrick Stewart's Professor Charles Xavier, when a growling voice — possibly Downey as Doom — warns of "something coming we may not be able to deter."
"Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision," says the same voice over clips of Xavier being blinded by something outside the window and a very quick look of Downey hiding behind the Doom mask.
Following the Marvel Studios logo are a number of encounters between characters who have never crossed paths before.
In the New Avengers tower, Thor introduces the Fantastic Four (Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach) to colleagues Scott Lang (Paul Rudd back as Ant-Man), the current Captain America Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan).
"I've fought with many warriors in my time," Thor says as more of the New Avengers appear. "They were far stronger than all of us put together, and they died."
With Bucky on the New Avengers are Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Avar Starr's Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Alexei Shostakov's Red Guardian (David Harbour).
Thor continues his war speech as Shuri (Letitia Wright), the new Black Panther, and M'baku (Winston Duke) meet anew with Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and his Talokanil people.
James Marsden's Scott Summer as Cyclops enters Xavier School with his visor ready while a fight ensues between Channing Tatum's Gambit and Simu Liu's Shang-Chi.

Thor calls on his would-be allies to stand together and honor past comrades, like his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who is briefly teased as well.
M'baku shakes hands with Ebon Moss-Bachrach's Ben Grimm when the Wakandans meet the Fantastic Four and the New Avengers, now joined by Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), but Yelena engages in combat against Rebecca Romijn's Mystique when the latter shapeshifts into her.
Hero shots of Xavier with Ian McKellen's Erik Lehnsherr or Magneto, Scott with daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton), Kirby's Sue and Quinn's Johnny as the Storm siblings, Shuri, Sam, Gambit, Cyclops, and Namor are shown as Thor finishes his speech.
"Put aside your petty squabbles and presume nothing except this: If you return, you will return as brothers and sisters," Thor says over a clip of Doom easily blocking his thunderous axe swing. "But mark my words, we're going to need a miracle."
Before the title card is Thor in disbelief that Steve is indeed back, proven by both Avengers capable of lifting the hammer Mjolnir.
