'Michael' overtakes 'Bohemian Rhapsody' as biggest music biopic ever

MANILA, Philippines — It took several weeks but Michael Jackson finally got Freddie Mercury to beat it, cinematically that is.
Jackson's biopic "Michael" just crossed $911.9 million (P55.4 billion) at the global box office, surpassing the Queen biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" as the highest-grossing music biopic of all time.
It is worth noting that Graham King was a producer on both movies, helping "Bohemian Rhapsody" earn four Oscars including a Best Actor win for Rami Malek in his role as Mercury.
The record is just latest milestone for the "Michael" movie which is Lionsgate's best ever release to date, overtaking several "Hunger Games" and "Twilight" movies.
"Michael" upon release recorded the largest global opening weekend ever for a musical biopic, contributed by individual records in 65 international markets.

In 45 of those territories, "Michael" surpassed the entire run "Bohemian Rhapsody" including Brazil, France and Mexico.
"Michael" is about to open in Japan so it is a high possibility that it could join animated film "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" as the only 2026 entries so far to cross the billion-dollar mark.
Trailing behind both films are "Project Hail Mary" and "The Devil Wears Prada 2" which are still screening globally, as is the Chinese sports comedy "Pegasus 3."
"Michael" tracks the titular character's early career with his brothers as part of the Jackson 5 under the domineering eyes of father Joseph (Colman Domingo) until the years he broke apart to become the musical legend we know him to be.
