1,928 new COVID-19 cases in the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health reported 1,928 new cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on Sunday, February 14, bringing the number of total cases to 549,176.

Of the total caseload, 25,918 or 4.7% are still classified as active cases, or patients who have neither passed away nor recovered and are still in hospitals and quarantine facilities.

The department in its latest case bulletin also reported 8 new deaths, bringing the total death toll to 11,515 or 2.1% of total cases.

Exactly 511,743 have so far recovered after the DOH added 10,967 more recoveries, good for a 93.2% recovery rate.

What's new today?

• Starting Monday, February 15, the national government's coronavirus task force has since decided to allow cinemas, video game arcades, and other establishments to resume their operations, citing once again the need to "open further" the economy. 
• Metro Manila mayors have voiced their objections to the decision, urging the Inter-Agency Task Force on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases to reconsider the move, which they fear poses a higher risk of coronavirus infections.
• The government has also allowed religious gatherings in areas under GCQ at up to 50% capacity beginning February 15.
• It has been 334 days since the enhanced community quarantine was first hoisted over some parts of Luzon. The Philippines is still under the world's longest lockdown. 
• Earlier, the health department assured the public that there is not enough evidence indicating that the more infectious coronavirus variant first identified in the United Kingdom is spreading further in the Philippines
• The Philippines' national caseload remains the second-highest in Southeast Asia and is the 32nd globally.
