FDA to Reno food firm: Secure certificate of registration

MANILA, Philippines — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requiring the manufacturer of Reno brand liver spread to secure proper authorization for the product to be marketed in the country as processed food.

The FDA said the company was ordered to secure a certificate of product registration after acquiring a license to operate as a manufacturer.

“Upon extensive search of FDA databases, Reno liver spread failed to secure a certificate of product registration. The FDA is mandated to inform the public, through an advisory, that the Reno liver spread is not registered as a processed food product and must secure the requirement from this office,” the FDA said in a statement issued yesterday.

The agency requires a license to operate and certificate of product registration before any processed food products can be released in the local market

The license to operate is granted to manufacturers, repackers, importers, distributors, wholesalers and traders who passed the FDA guidelines such as good manufacturing practices.

After obtaining a license to operate, a food business operator is required to secure a certificate of product registration, which entails checking of the safety and quality of a product.

“These have been the basic requirements of FDA since 2009,” the agency said.

Earlier, it cautioned the public against buying and consumption of unregistered processed meat product.

Reno Foods Inc., manufacturer of the Reno brand liver spread, has an existing license to operate as a food repacker.

In 2017, the company applied for a variation of their license to operate, to include their product line as manufacturer of processed meat products.

This year, FDA inspectors collected samples of Reno brand liver spread for verification of the certificate of product registration, but was found to have not applied for it.
