Toni Gonzaga's 'My Sassy Girl' Filipino remake premiering in January
MANILA, Philippines — Actress Toni Gonzaga is returning to the big screen in the Philippine adaptation of the South Korean hit movie "My Sassy Girl."
Viva Films announced on their social media pages the film directed by Fifth Solomon will be showing on January 31 in cinemas nationwide.
Starring opposite Toni is Pepe Herrera. Also in the cast are Yayo Aguila, Alma Moreno, Benj Manalo, Bodjie Pascua, Boboy Garrovillo, and the late Joey Paras.
The production outfit added the film's official trailer will be released soon.
Last January 2021 Toni revealed that playing the titular character in a Philippine adaptation was a dream come true.
"Hindi ko makakalimutan 'yun," Toni said about "My Sassy Girl," which she watched while shooting a movie in Pampanga.
"Sabi ni Direk Cathy [Garcia-Sampana], 'Panoorin mo 'yung 'Sassy Girl.' Iyan ang peg namin sa 'yo. Dapat ganiyan ka, may pagka-feisty'," Toni added.
On Toni's part, playing the titular character is a blessing for her.
"Twenty years after the film was released, I'm given the opportunity to play the role here in the Philippines. I consider it as a big blessing," she said.
"My Sassy Girl" is a 2001 South Korean romantic comedy film starring Jun Ji-hyun and Cha Tae-hyun.
The film was for a time South Korea's highest-grossing comedy of all time and one of the top five highest-grossing films ever.
An American remake, starring Jesse Bradford and Elisha Cuthbert, and directed by Yann Samuell, was released in 2008.
