'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' 2nd fastest film to hit $1B
MANILA, Philippines — New blockbuster "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" just managed to gross a billion dollars at the global box office in less than a week.
Producers Marvel Studios and Columbia Pictures confirmed that the latest solo outing of Tom Holland as the iconic webslinger broke the billion mark in six days.
Only 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" has reached that figure faster, after swiftly earning $1.2 billion (P73.2 billion) by its opening weekend.
It is worthy to note that "Brand New Day" managed to hit the milestone without screening in IMAX theater (except in Japan, Korea, and China) as "The Odyssey" has an exclusive run in the specialty cinema ending this week.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has achieved the following records in the Philippines:
- biggest opening day and weekend box office in the Philippines since the pandemic
- new opening day gross and weekend box office record in the Philippines for any "Spider-Man" movie
- new opening day gross record for a film released by Sony Pictures
- third-biggest opening day ever in the country behind the last two "Avengers" movies, "Endgame" and "Infinity War"

The movie is projected to quickly reach two billion at the global office — a feat only seven other movies have done including "Endgame" — and comfortably be among history's highest-grossing films.
For comparison, its predecessor "No Way Home" finished its theatrical run just shy of two billion and peaked at No. 6 on the all-time box office list.
So far this year, only three other films have reached a billion at the global box office: "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," "Michael," and "Toy Story 5."
"The Odyssey" — also starring Holland — is still running in cinemas and expected to join the lot. Other blockbusters anticipated to easily hit the mark are "Dune Part Three" and "Avengers: Doomsday" despite both coming out on the same day.
"Brand New Day" picks up with Holland's Peter literally forgotten by the rest of the world to preserve his identity and the safety of his closest friends MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) but is thriving as Spider-Man.
The webslinger comes face-to-face with a mysterious figure capable of jumping consciousnesses — but not his — as he grapples with all sorts of pain as a result of his struggling identity.
