BB Gandanghari hints at casting search for Rene Baterbonia biopic

MANILA, Philippines — Former actor BB Gandanghari has sparked anticipation for the planned biographical film about late basketball player Rene "Bobet" Baterbonia after teasing that the search for the movie's cast is about to begin.
In a recent Instagram post, BB revealed that casting is being prepared for the key roles in the project, including the characters of Bobet and his parents.
"The Search is ON…. Who will be? Mommy Rovelyn, Daddy Rene and BOBET! Abangan," she wrote.
Accompanying the announcement was a video of BB wearing Bobet's basketball jersey in the market where she helps the player's parents.
The project aims to tell the story of Bobet, a former Ateneo basketball standout whose life and untimely passing deeply affected the Philippine sports community.
While official details about the film's production timeline, cast, and release date have yet to be announced, BB's latest update suggests that pre-production efforts are gaining momentum.
Despite mixed reactions on social media, BB has remained focused on advancing the project and preserving the legacy of the young athlete through film.
Rene, 18, passed away on June 8 with Ateneo teammate Divine Adili from Nigeria in a tragic drowning incident during the Blue Eagles’ team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
He just arrived in Manila that week after his senior high school graduation from the Ateneo de Davao, which he led to multiple regional titles including the Davao Region’s first-ever Palarong Pambansa title in 2025 in Laoag, where he was named as the MVP.
