MANILA, Philippines — How is Ice Seguerra doing as the new “Eat Bulaga” director?

Call it perfect timing, but Ice’s joining the longest-running noontime show, where he also started his showbiz career as a child star, is coinciding with the newfound buzz “Eat Bulaga” has been getting lately.

The show has been trending recently because of the new “loveteam” of regular host Ryzza Mae Dizon and guest host Bimby Aquino-Yap. It even had the “approval” of the latter’s mom Kris Aquino, who also appeared on the show.

The “reunion” has gotten viewers nostalgic over the tandem who first worked together as child stars in the film “My Little Bossings.”

Ice was recently asked whose idea it was to bring Bimby, who’s clearly following in his mom’s footsteps, to the show. He said it came from the creatives.

A new ‘love team’ is born on ‘Eat Bulaga’: Ryzza Mae Dizon and Bimby Aquino are being tagged by fans of the show as the next AlDub.

Asked if Bimby is set to become a regular on “Eat Bulaga,” Ice recently told The Philippine STAR that he could not say for now, but noted that Bimby has been enjoying his time on the program.

“I can’t say po, pero nag-e-enjoy naman siya,” Ice said.

On the possibility of a loveteam between Bimby and Ryzza becoming “Eat Bulaga’s” next AlDub, Ice quipped, “Di malabo.”

Meanwhile, Ice also spoke fondly of Bimby, whom he last worked with years ago.

“It’s been a while… The last time was during the filming of ‘My Little Bossings,’” he recalled.

Ice said it has been nice seeing Bimby again, adding that he appreciates his “down-to-earth” approach to work.

As for Ice’s own adjustment to being the new director of “Eat Bulaga,” the singer-songwriter, actor and director said live television has given him a new kind of creative challenge.

“Yes, oo, nakakatuwa,” Ice said when asked how it has been directing the noontime show.

While he has directed concerts and other shows before, Ice admitted that live television is a different animal altogether.

It’s not just about calling the shots, but also keeping track of many moving parts at the same time, from the hosts and guests to the segments and unexpected moments that happen on air.

“Iba yung live… kailangan lagi kang aware ka sa lahat ng mga nangyayari,” he said.

Still, he said the work has been made lighter by the people around him.

“We have an amazing team and parang ’yun pa lang, kalahati ng trabaho,” Ice shared.

He also admitted that he is slowly becoming more comfortable in his new role.

“Medyo nagagamay ko na rin. Medyo hindi na ako kinakabahan,” he said.

Ice’s return to “Eat Bulaga” as a host adds another side to a career that has spanned music, acting and directing.

Asked to choose between performing and directing, he said it is difficult to pick one because each gives him a different kind of fulfillment.

“The singing, of course, it’s like an extension of myself,” Ice said.

Directing, on the other hand, gives him a “different set of challenges… mas grabe yung challenge niya, pero at the same time, grabe rin yung fulfillment kapag na-overcome yung challenges para mabuo at ma-execute yung vision na meron,” he said.

He would also love to act again. For now, Ice appears to be enjoying the many creative hats he wears.

The STAR got to talk to Ice on the sidelines of the White Party Manila over the weekend, one of the biggest gatherings of the LGBTQIA+ community for the celebration of the Pride month of June.

He was there as the director of the drag show segment of the event, which marked its comeback after a 14-year hiatus.

Asked what excites him about directing drag queens, Ice, who also manages drag artists under his Fire and Ice Productions with Liza Dino-Seguerra, said, “Sobrang iba siya sa artistry na meron ako, so every time I watch them, I just get really excited.”

Ice also reflected on Pride and the progress of the LGBTQIA+ community in the country.

“Looking back, parang ang layo na rin ng narating natin in terms of visibility and acceptance,” Ice said. “Malayo pa, di ba? Ang laki na rin ng pinagbago.”

He said he is proud to see more people becoming allies and more members of the community being recognized for who they truly are.

Ice said he can now really feel the acceptance, even as he acknowledged that there is still more work to be done.

“Marami pang hindi makaintindi, kaya nga meron pa ring Pride,” he said.

As for “baby plans” with Liza, Ice said those have taken a back seat for now because of their many responsibilities, especially with their daughter Amara and their work.

Their work already makes them feel like they have many children to look after.

“Right now, especially with the company, sobrang ang dami naming anak talaga. Parang 25 yung mga anak namin ngayon,” Ice said.

Still, Ice said he is not closing his doors.
