Ogie Alcasid celebrates being son and father in ‘Daddyokie’

Ogie Alcasid is having a Father’s Day concert. Titled “Daddyokie,” it will be held on June 19 and 20 at the Proscenium Theater in Makati. In typical Ogie fashion, he will not only be making music, he is looking forward to hitting a few other targets during the show.
One. He wants to celebrate all dads. While Father’s Day is now observed every year, there was a time in the recent past when there was only Mother’s Day. Moms got flowers, candies, jewelry, spa staycations, etc. Some dads probably asked, “What about us?” So, now, we also celebrate Father’s Day, too, and Ogie wants to do this one in a big way.
“I dedicate ‘Daddyokie’ to all fathers,” said Ogie. “Since I also write my own songs, I usually sing those during my shows, and it was always OK. But because this is ‘Daddyokie,’ it will be different.
“It will be a throwback show. It will be a party for dads. I will sing songs from different eras, like those of the Apo Hiking Society or Earth, Wind & Fire from many years ago. Dads love those. I see ‘Daddyokie’ as nostalgic, filled with timeless hits and feel-good moments.”
“Of course. Then, I will also sing songs for dads of my age. Mga kantang naging hit when I was in high school. I’d like my friends to be there. We will sing and remember. I will make ‘Daddyokie’ a big sing-along show. This will be fun,” added he.
Those who will be watching, take note of that title, “Daddy” plus “Okie.” Just like Karaoke. That means there will be lots of singing for the audience to do. So, all those of you who will be there to watch, prepare to do a lot of singing, too.
Along with delighting the fathers, Ogie will also celebrate himself as a son. A star of the celebration will probably be Ogie’s own father, Herminio Alcasid Sr., whom he lost at the age of 90 six years ago. “I am very close to my parents. My mother is now 96 and strong. Wala na ang dad ko, but I feel blessed that I grew old with my dad. Maybe I will sing some of his favorite songs.”
And then Ogie will celebrate himself as a father. He is father to Leila, Sarah and Nate. There is now the possibility of grandkids in his future. Now, while he is thinking of giving other dads a great time with “Daddyokie,” he is also, in a way, celebrating himself.
Aside from being with his family, Ogie is also at his happiest while performing. Just think, right after he arrived home from a tour of the U.S. of A. and Canada on the “Q&A” show with Odette Quesada, he began work on “Daddyokie.” He must have been tired from his trip. But no matter. He said, “This does not feel like work anymore.”
And he tells the story of hearing the audience sing along with his early hits, most especially to Nandito Ako. He recorded the song in 1989 when he was starting a love team for a TV sitcom with Manilyn Reynes. It is now 37 years old, but the melody and its sentiments have proven to be timeless.
“I was so touched and happy. The people were crying whenever I would sing Nandito Ako. Naiiyak din ako,” he recalled.
So, even if he intends to please his daddy audience at the Proscenium with their favorite tunes, there is no way that he can escape doing Nandito Ako. Why not? It should be part of his own Father’s Day celebration.
