‘Annie Batungbakal’ musical pushes through after 6-year delay
‘Bongga Ka, ’Day! The Annie Batungbakal Musical’ will be co-produced anew by Viva Entertainment, The Philippine STAR and Newport World Resorts with PETA Plus.

MANILA, Philippines — Following the successful run of “Bagets: The Musical,” theatergoers can look forward to another stage production inspired by the music of the iconic OPM band Hotdog — “Bongga Ka, ’Day! The Annie Batungbakal Musical.”

The upcoming show was teased on Sunday, March 22, during the final matinee performance of “Bagets: The Musical” at Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT).

Producers presented a preview featuring live performances of Hotdog’s classic hits Bongga Ka Day and Annie Batungbakal, confirming that the new musical is slated to open in September 2026.

During the performance, a stand-in actress for the titular role appeared onstage. But with her identity concealed, it fueled fan speculation about who would take on the lead role.

The production draws inspiration from the 1979 musical-comedy film “Annie Batungbakal,” which starred the late National Artist Nora Aunor.

Details about the full cast, ticket sales and exact run dates have yet to be announced. However, Boss Vic del Rosario Jr., head honcho of Viva Entertainment, shared early insights in a brief interview with The Philippine STAR on Sunday.

When asked whether rising actress Atasha Muhlach would take on the lead role, he responded with a smile, “Hindi ako sure.”

Atasha’s brother, Andres, was part of “Bagets: The Musical,” where he reprised their father Aga Muhlach’s, previous role as Adie in the hit 1984 film.

Andres’ perennial onscreen partner Ashtine Olviga was also among the possible names that cropped up for the titular character.

“Bongga Ka, ’Day! The Annie Batungbakal Musical” will be co-produced by Viva Entertainment, The Philippine STAR and Newport World Resorts with PETA Plus.

The show will reportedly be directed by Chris Millado and written by playwright Lisa Magtoto, with audition announcements expected to be released by April.

“The Annie Batungbakal Musical” was originally scheduled for a 2020 run, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
