MANILA, Philippines — American actor Nicholas Brendon, best known for starring in the television shows "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Kitchen Confidential," has passed away. He was 54 years old.

Brendon's family confirmed the actor's passing in a statement shared to several media outlets, announcing that he had died in his sleep from natural causes.

The family statement acknowledged Brendon being known for his acting while sharing in recent years he found a passion for painting.

"Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create," the family said. "Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.

They acknowledged Brendon's struggles with alcoholism and legal problems, saying the actor was on medications and treatment with hopeful optimism prior to his death.

"Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support," the statement ended.

Brendon's most popular role was Xander Harris in all seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," which he followed up with "Kitchen Confidential" alongside Bradley Cooper.

He later had recurring roles on "American Dragon: Jake Long," "Criminal Minds," "Private Practice" and "Faking It." His last onscreen appearance was in the 2021 movie "Wanton Want."

In 2023, he was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect after suffering a heart attack. This was on top of having cauda equina syndrome, leading to several spinal surgeries.
