Michael Sager sees his own story in ‘Born to Shine’

Sparkle GMA young actor Michael Sager has come a long way from being part of the 17-member Kapuso group Sparkada and onscreen tandems to becoming a rising leading man. He is ready to further broaden his showbiz horizons.
“Well, actually, it’s my fifth year moving to the Philippines,” said the tall, chinito and charming actor in a chat with The STAR. “In the industry, it’s my fourth year. So, parang ang bilis lang ng panahon (it’s just like time flies). I’m so thankful. Every year, may nangyayaring memorable (something memorable happens in my showbiz career)… So, I’m so thankful.”
Part of his core showbiz memory is the forthcoming GMA Afternoon Prime drama “Born to Shine,” that reunites him again with Zephanie. Michael plays the singer-songwriter named Nate, while Zephanie is the aspiring artist Jennie, who wishes to be part of a girl group. Michael and Zephanie collaborated in “Sparkle U.”
“Born to Shine” is a follow-up project to his show, “My Ilonggo Girl,” with Jillian Ward, and his stint in the first-ever “Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition.”
“Born to Shine” will premiere on March 23 at 2:30 p.m.
“This is the show that I relate to the most in terms of my career because it’s about showbiz,” shared he about the themes “Born to Shine” such as chasing one’s dreams and fulfilling them explores, “except for the fact na nepo baby ako dito, anak ni Ms. Roselle (my character is a nepo baby, the son of Ms. Roselle Nava’s character, Monica), the owner of the music company (Astra M-Records).”
He described his character by saying that “he just wants to be raw and authentic, to show his passion, his talent,” although he has to tap his full potential, as one may add.
Stepping into the world of Nate somehow feels familiar to actor Michael. Recording songs and acting on TV are part of the entertainment industry. The process of establishing one’s name and achieving success in them could also be the same.
“When I reflected on my career, parang hindi ako makapaniwala (I couldn’t believe it) kasi parang, ‘Thank you, Lord’ lang talaga and every year, I’m just praying,” said Michael of his entertainment journey and navigating it. “Every year, may moments parang Lord, ‘Ano na po ba ang gagawin ko. Kayo na po ang bahala (what will I do next? You take care of everything)… and God is good. He is always guiding me throughout my career in showbiz (and) giving me opportunities.”
And he values every blessing or manna from heaven — big or small — that comes his way by giving his all and commitment to it, whether it’s an off-screen activity like a workshop.
Michael knows that it’s part of his unfolding and evolving story in the entertainment industry.
Aside from “Born to Shine,” he will also be seen in the horror movie “Huwag Kang Titingin,” but romantic comedy holds a special spot in his heart, as one could glean from his answers.
“I grew up in a KathNiel (Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla) era (and) Liza (Soberano) and Enrique (Gil), talagang prominent yung rom-com (the genre was really prominent),” said he, who also sees himself doing dramatic and heavy roles in the future.
As for the matters of the heart, he had this to share: “I mean gusto ko man ng pag-ibig, feeling ko kasi if I really want to focus on my love life, I have to give it time din kasi effort din yan. So, sana, sana, minsan may araw na sana all na lang tayo.”
At last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), Michael had the opportunity to display his knack for hosting, and because of that, he developed his passion for it.
“We’re in this day and age (that) pwede tayong mag-explore (we could explore other areas of the entertainment industry), and ako nag-e-enjoy akong nag-ho-host (I’m enjoying hosting) and so, maybe in this industry I’m able to tap into that at sana magka-show ako na hosting naman (I hope to have a show where I can host), and we’ll see, we’ll just see.”
For now, Michael will be busy telling the story of singer-songwriter Nate in “Born to Shine,” which airs Mondays to Saturdays
