Oscars includes Mike de Leon in extended 'In Memoriam' list

MANILA, Philippines — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) honored the late Filipino filmmaker Mike de Leon in its full "In Memoriam" list honoring film industry members who passed away last year.
AMPAS hosted the annual Academy Awards last year, which saw "One Battle After Another" dominate with six Oscar wins including Best Picture.
The "In Memoriam" segment this year was highlighted by tributes for Rob and Michele Reiner, Diane Keaton, Catherine O'Hara, and Robert Redford.
The Reiners' tribute featured onstage appearances by the likes of Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Demi Moore, Kathy Bates, Annette Bening, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Carol Kane, Kiefer Sutherland, Fred Savage, and John Cusack.
Rachel McAdams delivered the tribute for both Keaton and O'Hara, while Barbra Streisand, in honoring Redford, briefly sang "The Way We Were" from their 1973 movie of the same name.
De Leon's name was not part of the televised broadcast but appears on the Academy's website, credited as a director, cinematographer, editor, and writer.
The celebrated director passed away last August at 78 years old. His stellar filmography includes "Batch '81," "Kisapmata," "Itim," "Kakabakaba Ka Ba?," "Sister Stella L.," "Bayaning Third World," and "Citizen Jake."
He also shot and produced Lino Brocka's "Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag" and shot Eddie Romero's "Aguila." None of de Leon's films were ever submitted as the Philippine entry to the Oscars.
