For many fans around the world, “One Piece” is not just a show about pirates chasing treasure. It has become something much bigger, especially in recent years.

It has also evolved into a movement powered by hope, courage and the audacity to dream.

And nowhere was that more evident than in Japan, where fans, creators and media from across the globe gathered for the global fan event, celebrating the highly anticipated second season of the Netflix live-action series. It is one of the best adaptations out there, as Netflix made the right choice of involving creator Eiichiro Oda in every step of the way.

Among those flying the Philippine flag proudly was a lively delegation, led by the Netflix Philippines team, with Francis Romero and Danica Gigante steering what could easily be called one of the most spirited crews in the room.

Joining the adventure were personalities and creators who share a deep love for the franchise: cosplayer and gamer Myrtle Sarrosa; health advocate and content creator Arshie Larga; entertainment anchor Gretchen Fullido; morning show host Lyn Ching; actor Allen Ansay; media personality Hans Galendez; and “One Piece” YouTube expert Jacob Enero. Think of it as a Straw Hat crew Philippine edition.

From the moment the activities began, it was clear that the gathering was designed to mirror the themes that have made “One Piece” resonate for more than two decades.

Participants were asked to take part in activities like collaborative map-making, problem-solving games and group challenges that emphasized teamwork — a core pillar of the “One Piece” story.

Just like the Straw Hat Pirates, success depended on trusting your crew.

The games were fun, chaotic and sometimes competitive, but the underlying message was unmistakable: greatness is rarely achieved alone.

And that, in many ways, reflects the philosophy of Monkey D. Luffy.

The author with some of the press and influencers from the Philippines, including Arshie Larga, Gretchen Fullido, Hans Galendez and Allen Ansay, at the ‘One Piece’ global gathering.

Luffy is not the strongest pirate in the beginning. He is not the smartest strategist. But what makes him magnetic is his unwavering belief in people and in freedom, the freedom to chase dreams no matter how impossible they seem, and with a great attitude at that.

Across the world, the Straw Hat Jolly Roger, which is that iconic pirate flag, has become more than just a fictional emblem.

From protests in Nepal and Indonesia to rallies in Mexico and even demonstrations stretching from EDSA to Luneta, the flag has been spotted among crowds advocating for rights and social change.

For many young people, particularly Gen Z, the Straw Hat symbol has become shorthand for fighting against injustice and belief in a better world. It represents the courage to stand up, the courage to sail against the current, and above all, the courage to dream.

“When I say, ‘One,’ you say, ‘Piece!’”

During the fan event, energy in the room soared as the cast joined the celebration.

“When I say, ‘ONE,’ you say, ‘PIECE!’”

“ONE!”

“PIECE!”

Leading the rally was the man at the center of it all — Iñaki Godoy, who brings Luffy to life in the live-action adaptation. We sat down with him to chat along with his crew Jacob Gibson, Taz Skylar and Emily Rudd.

“It’s epic!” Godoy exclaimed when asked about the global impact of the series.

The cast acknowledged the story’s power that goes far beyond the screen.

Jacob, who plays the sharpshooter Usopp, shared how crucial it feels to be part of the project.

“As artists, as actors, we need to be part of something meaningful,” he said. “And it doesn’t get any better than this.”

For Emily, who portrays navigator Nami, the phenomenon of “One Piece” feels almost larger than the people bringing it to life.

The author dons a pirate-inspired costume at the ‘One Piece’ global event welcome dinner.

“Ultimately, I think we’re such a small part of it,” she said. “‘One Piece’ speaks for itself. It inspires people to pursue their dreams and fight for what’s right.”

The story follows young pirate Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat crew as they travel the seas in search of the legendary treasure known as the One Piece.

Finding it would allow Luffy to achieve his ultimate dream: becoming the Pirate King.

Originally created as a manga by Eiichiro Oda, “One Piece” has grown into one of the longest-running and most beloved animé franchises in history. The Netflix adaptation has introduced the story to an entirely new generation. And with season two, the adventure is set to become even bigger.

Fans have praised the live-action series for its faithful and detailed interpretation of the beloved characters. One viral moment showed actor Taz undergoing intense fasting and dehydration to achieve the lean animé-inspired physique of Sanji. But Taz quickly reminded fans not to imitate the extreme preparation.

“Nobody asked me to do it,” he explained to us. “It was self-imposed. I wanted to give the absolute best version of the character.”

The dedication is part of what has earned the series respect from long-time fans.

Another reason for the show’s popularity is its commitment to diverse casting.

Fan-favorite swordsman Roronoa Zoro is portrayed by Japanese actor Mackenyu, while season two will also introduce Filipino representation with Julia Rehwald joining the cast as the Marine officer Tashigi.

For Filipino fans, it’s another reason to celebrate.

Season Two of the Netflix pirate adventure raises the stakes dramatically. Luffy and the Straw Hats will set sail for the Grand Line — the most dangerous and mysterious stretch of ocean in the world of One Piece. There, they will encounter bizarre islands, powerful enemies and adventures that will test the limits of their friendship and courage.

Watching the excitement unfold in Japan, one thing becomes clear: “One Piece” is not simply about pirates or treasure. It is about believing that dreams — no matter how ridiculous they sound — are worth chasing. It is about finding your crew and having a founded family.

And it is about fighting for freedom in a world that often tells people to stay in line.

In other words, it might as well be a philosophy, too.

For millions of fans around the globe, it’s a reminder that the greatest treasure may not be gold at the end of the sea, but the journey and the people who sail with you.

Exciting times are ahead as “One Piece: Into the Grand Line” season two is sailing now on Netflix.
