GMA’s bloodletting legacy: 30 years of saving lives

GMA’s bloodletting legacy: 30 years of saving lives
Now marking its 30th year of partnership with the Philippine Red Cross and EVER Commonwealth, GMA Kapuso Foundation’s bi-annual initiative, ‘Sagip Dugtong Buhay,’ has become a cornerstone of public service. Over three decades, the program has collected a total of 78,491 blood units. According to the Philippine Red Cross, it translates to 235,473 patients nationwide who have been given a second lease on life through the initiative.

More often than not, we tend to underestimate small acts. We think impact has to be loud, dramatic and life-altering in visible ways. We wait for grand gestures, big donations, sweeping change. But sometimes, impact fits inside a single blood bag.

To a donor, participating in a bloodletting drive can feel routine — a form to fill out, a few minutes of waiting, a bandage on the arm. Unknowingly, that single donation can save up to three lives. Somewhere, a surgery continues, a cancer patient receives treatment, a trauma victim survives the night, just to mention a few. What feels small to one person becomes a matter of survival to another.

That quiet exchange captures something deeply Filipino. We call it bayanihan. It is generosity without applause and service without spectacle. It transcends age, status and background.

Through humanitarian programs like blood donation drives, Filipinos find a tangible outlet for this spirit. A premier example is GMA Kapuso Foundation’s (GMAKF) bi-annual initiative, “Sagip Dugtong Buhay.”

Now marking its 30th year of partnership with the Philippine Red Cross and EVER Commonwealth, the program has become a cornerstone of public service. Over three decades, “Sagip Dugtong Buhay” has collected a total of 78,491 blood units. According to the Philippine Red Cross, it translates to 235,473 patients nationwide who have been given a second lease on life through the initiative.

In its 30th year, the program continues its mission of service. On Feb. 7, it launched its first bloodletting activity of 2026 at EVER Commonwealth, drawing generous donors from across Metro Manila. The event was a resounding success, with the Philippine Red Cross successfully collecting 1,818 blood bags in a single day.

The pulse of volunteerism was felt just as strongly in the province. A day earlier, on Feb. 6, GMA Regional TV held the “Kapuso Bloodletting Day” in various regions across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Launched in 2008, the GMA Regional TV bloodletting day aims to promote the spirit of volunteerism and extend help to communities in need. Through brave and kind-hearted souls, a total of 681 bags have been collected from Dagupan (82), Cebu (86), Bacolod (165), Iloilo (57), Davao (102), GenSan (93) and Cagayan de Oro (96).

Indeed, these are not just numbers. They are reminders that altruism is not extinct, as it knows no bounds. It is organized. It is sustained. It is alive.

Of course, these milestones would remain out of reach without the tireless efforts of those behind the scenes. We owe a debt of gratitude to the volunteers and staff of GMA Network, GMA Kapuso Foundation, GMA Regional TV and the Philippine Red Cross, many of whom work well beyond their official hours to organize and coordinate these massive undertakings. We also recognize the artists and talents who consistently lend their influence and time to these humanitarian projects.

The success of these programs proves that while the need remains great, the Filipino heart is greater. Millions of our countrymen require transfusions every day, and it is through these sustained initiatives that the essence of being a Kapuso is truly manifested. Because in the end, being a Kapuso is more than just a title — it is a commitment to show up, to give and to stand with others when it matters most.

As GMA Kapuso Foundation’s “Sagip Dugtong Buhay” and GMA Regional TV’s bloodletting initiatives move into their next decade, they carry with them the stories of hundreds of thousands of survivors.

Thirty years of service have taught us that a single hour of a donor’s time can buy a lifetime for someone else. In the end, these blood bags are not just medical supplies — they are vessels of hope, proving that everyone’s small acts can make great impact on individuals, even on our nation. The legacy is not just in the blood collected but in the lives that continue to be lived because of it.
