Backstreet Boys taps Britney Spears, NSYNC in Super Bowl halftime 2027 petition
MANILA, Philippines — Are you in for a ‘90s “pop explosion” with the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and NSYNC at the Super Bowl halftime show?
AJ McLean told People.com that he started an online petition together the best pop acts of the 1990s, the era that he and the rest of BSB, namely, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, Nick Carter and Howie Dorough, dominated the radio hit charts.
“I just started an online petition on behalf of the group for us to do halftime 2027,” AJ told People, adding that next year’s halftime show will be in Los Angeles, home to him and Kevin.
Nick, the youngest of the group, formed in 1993 in Orlando, Florida, said their 2027 show would be a “pop explosion” featuring other ‘90s and early 2000s music icons.
“We're bringing back Britney Spears, we're bringing back NSYNC,” Nick said, adding 98 Degrees to the list.
Britney and BSB’s longtime boy band rival, NSYNC, were among the performers at the 2001 Super Bowl XXXV halftime show, joining Aerosmith, Mary J. Blige and Nelly, while the BSB declined to join the performance and instead sang the American national anthem.
“We're bringing all of our pop friends back; it would be something like that,” Nick said.
"We're biased because we really think that our era of music, coming from the late '90s, early 2000s, is probably some of the most nostalgic for people and makes people feel good. We're part of a club of all those artists that you'd have to bring them back," the youngest BSB member added.
This year’s Super Bowl halftime show was headlined by Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny, who became the first solo performer to sing a set entirely in Spanish, with guest superstars Lady Gaga, Ricky Martin, Pedro Pascal and Jessica Alba.
