DAY6 marks a decade in music with high-energy Philippines show

For Korean pop-rock group DAY6, earning the title ‘Nation’s Band’ didn’t happen overnight. It was a journey defined by years of hard work and the unwavering support of their fans since their 2015 debut. That steadfast love was on full display when Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil and Dowoon brought their ‘The DECADE’ 10th anniversary tour to the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines — Thriving in Korea’s music scene for 10 years now is no joke. In the case of Korean pop-rock group DAY6, becoming the “Nation’s Band” was not an easy feat, but they powered through with the unwavering love of their fans since their debut in 2015.

DAY6’s Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil and Dowoon witnessed such steadfast support from Filipino fans, known as My Day, during their “The DECADE” 10th anniversary tour on Jan. 24 at the MOA Arena.

Buzzing with high energy, the band kicked off their set with Time of Our Life and further boosted the mood with Melt Down, HAPPY and Welcome to the Show.

“This is hot! So hot! Receiving your great energy, we will also do our best in performing all-out for you! I think it’s meaningful because this is our 10th anniversary concert. Being here with all of you makes it more meaningful for us,” said Wonpil, the band’s vocalist, keyboardist and synthesizer, through an interpreter.

After their groovy lineup of Disco Day, The Power of Love and days gone by, the quartet went to the extended platform to interact closer with the crowd.

“You guys are amazing tonight. It’s very… “Salamat po!” bassist and vocalist Young K quipped, as they proceeded to delight fans with heartfelt stages of Marathon, Maybe Tomorrow and Zombie.

“Every time we come here, we receive so much energy. You got the very positive vibe,” he added.

Of course, the band would not dare forget to include You Were Beautiful in their concert set list. Dubbed the “national anthem,” the iconic song released in 2017 is one of DAY6’s timeless hits that never fails to enter the Korean music charts until now.

“Like I said, great energy! And great voices! You guys know how to sing, huh?” Young K remarked after performing the emotional tracks Letting Go, I Smile and You make Me.

Sustaining the passionate energy, Filipino My Day impressed DAY6 by singing along with them during their impromptu performances of Healer, I Loved You and Welcome to the Show.

As they returned to the main stage, DAY6 shifted the vibe to intense mode, courtesy of their exhilarating rock hits Love me or Leave Me, WARNING!, Sweet Chaos and Shoot Me.

“We came back after 11 months, and I think your energy is higher and hotter this time! All of you, from the first floor up until the upper floors, we feel your energy,” said Wonpil.

Following their high-energy hits, DAY6 changed things up as they sang some of their most heartfelt songs, starting with Afraid, which received cheers from fans just from the immediate recognition of the song’s intro. They continued the set with so let’s love and I Like You. Fans were then asked to open their phone flashlights as the band sang Our Season, putting everyone in a heartwarming mood.

When the band momentarily returned to the backstage area for a wardrobe change, Filipino My Day took a trip down memory lane as they sang, karaoke style, the band’s title tracks and hit songs, from Melt Down until their 2016 release, Letting Go.

The segment ended suddenly, but the fans’ confusion was resolved immediately as the screen displayed a profound statement that resonated with fans — accompanied by a melody that stirred nostalgia within people’s hearts.

“Our Beginning, Congratulations. A day when the word ‘congratulations’ still felt awkward. As we turned our first page, different emotions began to bloom with each season. ‘The Day,’ ‘The DECADE.’ From ‘The Day,’ our beginning, the ten years we built together, day by day, ‘The DECADE,’” the text stated.

Before continuing their commentary, the men of DAY6 were surprised by the fans with a heartfelt video project.

Suddenly, the boys were back on stage, singing their debut album’s (The Day) title track, Congratulations — with the fans singing along to the hit that started it all 10 years ago. The encore stage continued as DAY6 sang their “The DECADE” songs, “Dream Bus” and “INSIDE OUT.”

Through the collective effort of volunteer Filipino My Day, the VCR project conveyed the fans’ appreciation to the band:

“DAY6, you’re more than just the soundtrack of our lives. You’re the compass that guides us. Ten years is not the end of the road. It’s the milestone that marks our journey ahead. And wherever it leads, whatever waits beyond, we’ll keep moving forward.”

As the VCR ended, the fans surprised the band by raising their banners with an earnest quote, which says, “Together with DAY6 through detours, delays and high roads.”

The boys, visibly touched by the fan project, each came forward and said their sentiments.

“The past 11 months may be (a) short or a long time for you, but we always look forward to coming here. You never forget us, and we feel that we are always in your hearts,” said Wonpil.

“Thank you so much because we were able to have our 10th anniversary concert here, and we’re so happy that we’re here in front of you. By receiving this great energy, we feel that we have to give back through our music,” he added.

With delight traced on his face, drummer Dowoon also shared his appreciation with the fans: “Gusto ko pumunta rito araw-araw! Whenever we come here, we’re always amazed by your high energy. Gagawin namin ang best namin para makabalik dito sa Pilipinas nang mas mabilis. Thanks to you guys, I’m overwhelmed by joy. Let’s live without regrets!”

“Saan n’yo ba kinukuha itong energy na ‘to?. I hope that you use this energy in your daily lives so that you can endure the hard times. Gamitin n’yo lahat ng energy n’yo para maging healthy kayo at mas maging masaya kayo sa buhay,” said guitarist and vocalist Sungjin, who is the group’s leader.

Lastly, Young K delivered his speech, leveraging the VCR’s message: “To us, to me, each and every one of you, you guys are more than just one listener… You guys are the reason why we sing — the reason why we go on stage, the reason why we compose, why we write lyrics and why we release albums. You guys are the reason why we wanna come back.”

“Remember, each and every one of you, you guys are very important… Please know, you guys are more than just whatever you think you are. You guys are great. Thank you for being that. I had a blast. I had a great time. We want to come back as soon as possible. Thank you, salamat po,” Young K added.

After a quick photo time (with fans gushing as Sungjin said “I love you so much!” several times), the band proceeded with the concert, singing another set of high-energy songs with Somehow and Freely. The fans sang along, jiving and being one with the music.

The fun continued, with the audience repeatedly saying the word “encore,” in hopes of hearing another song to cap this wonderful day — and the four guys obliged.

The fans screamed as they heard the familiar beat of Best Part — the cherry on top for the day — a wonderful celebration for a decade’s worth of hard work and perseverance.

The audience stood up, savoring the moment, reminding themselves that the very moment they’re in might just be the best part of their lives.

Towards the concert finale, Sungjin said a wonderful message to My Day: “Sana samahan nyo kami hanggang sa dulo. Ang dami naming na-receive na energy from you, guys. Please be happy and healthy until we see each other again.”
