From ‘Dragons’ to ‘Knights’: Why ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ will hook ‘Game of Thrones’ fans
In ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ the spotlight is on Ser Duncan the Tall, a noble knight, and his young squire, Egg — a secret Targaryen heir navigating the treacherous world of Westeros. Their bond drives the story forward, blending adventure, humor and heartfelt moments in a way that both longtime fans and newcomers will appreciate.

If there’s one series with a fan base so massive that it spans the globe — and yes, the Philippines included — it’s “Game of Thrones.”

Seven years after the epic saga concluded, the world of Westeros continues to captivate audiences, thanks to “House of the Dragon” as well. And now, fans have a brand-new adventure to look forward to: another highly anticipated spin-off, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”

Before diving into the spin-off, it’s worth noting why “Game of Thrones” became a cultural phenomenon and a benchmark for modern television.

It was where we first saw shock worthy scenes where the protagonist dies early on in the story and we do not know what is coming next. The series combined intricate political intrigue, morally complex characters and cinematic production values rarely seen on the small screen.

With sprawling sets, jaw-dropping special effects and storylines adapted from George R.R. Martin’s rich novels, the show blurred the line between cinema and TV. Audiences were drawn to its unpredictability, from shocking character deaths to morally gray decision-making, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.

Its ensemble cast and deeply layered narrative arcs allowed multiple storylines to unfold simultaneously, creating a richly textured world. Add to that the intense fan engagement online, meme culture and community discussions, and it’s clear why “Game of Thrones” became a defining series of the decade.

Unlike the original series, which often centered on massive dragons and sprawling wars, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” narrows its focus. The spotlight is on Ser Duncan the Tall, a noble knight, and his young squire, Egg — a secret Targaryen heir navigating the treacherous world of Westeros.

Their bond drives the story forward, blending adventure, humor and heartfelt moments in a way that both longtime fans and newcomers will appreciate.

HBO Max gave us the opportunity to talk to the showrunner and lead stars of the highly antipicated series. We caught up with Peter Claffey (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell (Egg), who described the chemistry they developed on set, which translated beautifully on screen.

“We had two months of prep before filming, and during that time, we got to meet each other every time we went horse riding,” Peter shared. “I was a massive fan of ‘Game of Thrones.’ So, being a lead character in this world is a dream come true.”

Dexter chimed in, reflecting on their on-screen relationship.

“The way Peter acts affects my acting. It’s like having a big brother. We bounce off each other, and that energy carries into every scene.”

Interestingly, Dexter underwent a physical transformation for the role, shaving his head to emulate the Targaryen family’s signature look.

Beyond the physical, he appreciated seeing Westeros from the perspective of ordinary people: “Usually, the story follows highborn characters. But this time, you get to see the journey from the perspective of people from this place. It’s a different trip, a different journey.”

Showrunner Ira Parker provided fascinating insights into how the spin-off balances the tone of “Game of Thrones” while carving its own identity.

“We wanted to maintain the intrigue and complexity of Westeros but focus on a smaller, more intimate story. Dunk and Egg’s adventures allow viewers to explore the world in a fresh way,” Ira explained.

One notable difference from the original “Game of Thrones” is the episode format. While the original series often ran for over an hour, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” keeps each installment concise, with episodes running just over 30 minutes. It makes the series easy to digest, perfect for both die-hard fans and newcomers alike.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s stories, the events of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” take place nearly a century before the original series, providing context to the Targaryen lineage and the political machinations that would eventually shape Westeros.

The series has already generated buzz online, with high ratings and enthusiastic fan reactions. Clips of the cast’s interviews and snippets from the trailer offer fans first dibs on behind-the-scenes moments. One of the highlights of my interviews was discovering the close-knit relationships among the cast.

Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell, in particular, spoke fondly of their mentor-mentee dynamic. “He’s like a big brother to me,” Dexter said.

Their chemistry, forged through horseback riding lessons, fight choreography and long filming days, adds authenticity to their portrayal of Dunk and Egg.

Finn Bennett and Bertie Carvel also shared stories about the rigorous preparation for their roles, including studying Targaryen history and mastering subtle nuances in mannerisms and speech. Meanwhile, Shaun Thomas and Tanzyn Crawford described how improvising during filming allowed for authentic, sometimes hilarious moments that made it into the final cut. For viewers, the spin-off offers the perfect blend of familiarity and freshness.

It’s Westeros, yes, but with a different lens — a lens that zooms in on heroism, loyalty and the bonds between mentor and protégé. With just over 30 minutes per episode, the pacing keeps the story tight while letting each character shine.

With its combination of adventure, camaraderie and heartfelt storytelling, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” promises to be a must-watch for 2026 and beyond. And for fans of “House of the Dragon,” the spin-off offers a natural bridge, adding depth to the Targaryen story while remaining entertaining, accessible and emotionally resonant.

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is available on HBO Max.
