Rhen Escaño on knowing her worth and choosing herself

MANILA, Philippines — From her daring role in the sexy thriller “Adan” to her appearance in “FPJ’s Ang Probinsiyano,” Rhen Escaño took pride in how her showbiz career has evolved over the years.
She is at a point in her career where she has the freedom to choose what she wants to do. “I’m not saying that I don’t want to do what I did before, I mean it’s part of the journey,” she told the press during the mediacon for Viva Movie Box (VMB) microdrama series “Akin Ka Lang.”
“I know that there are things that I need to do to get noticed. And I considered it as a stepping stone to become better at my craft, to show people that I can do things. And I’m at the point in my career where I feel I finally had the chance to show what I could do aside from doing provocative films.”
Rhen further recalled that she had appeared in a teen-oriented show before “Adan.” “I really want to show that my career journey is not confined in a box,” she said and extended her gratitude to Viva for giving her the chance to explore other roles.
In VMB’s “Akin Ka Lang,” which is helmed by Christian Paolo Lat, Rhen portrays Kendra, Albie Casiño’s Alfred’s ex-girlfriend.
Alfred and Nathalie Hart’s Clea are newlyweds who are starting their own family now that the latter is pregnant, the synopsis reads.
Alfred’s mother, the materialistic and image-conscious Martha (Shirley Fuentes), is quite excited, too, and starts warming up to Clea. Martha is aware that whoever produces an heir first in the family will get Alfred’s late father’s inheritance. Finally, Clea gets her mother-in-law’s approval.
But their happiness is short-lived. Clea loses the baby and finds out that she can’t get pregnant again. Desperate for the inheritance, Martha pushes them to take on Alfred’s ex-girlfriend, Kendra, as a surrogate.
With Kendra entering the picture, can Clea still keep her place as Alfred’s wife and lover? Does Alfred even need to be reminded that he belongs to no one else but her?
The drama series is now streaming on VMB, consisting of 61 episodes of no more than three minutes each.
In relation to the theme of the series, Rhen was asked about her views on cheating and how far one should go to fight for the person they love.
Rhen sighed and explained, “There are two versions of myself. One version I’ve already moved past but where I went too far, to the point that my mental health really suffered, and I felt like I needed to see a psychiatrist.”
Admitting her tendency to give her all when it comes to love, she said she became burned out after repeatedly accepting and forgiving the person.
“But now, I’m the type na once I would sense a red flag, (I would be like) ‘OK, this won’t work.’ I guess yung pupunta ako dun sa dating ako (when I think I would be reverting to my old self). So I try to avoid that. I’ve grown and learned from that… And I’m very thankful that I’m now at the part where I can say, ‘This is the best version of myself.’”
The piece of advice she would give to someone who has experienced cheating is: “‘Girl, you don’t deserve that. No one deserves that. Love and take care of yourself first. The right person will come at hinding-hindi ipaparamdam sa’yo yung question about your worth and your dignity as a woman.”
“There will come a time when you understand why it happened to you. Maybe it was something you needed to learn along the way,” she continued.
She reiterated that “you really have to level up to love yourself and focus on yourself.”
“So that you also attract someone of higher value and you won’t end up in situations where you still have to get hurt just to learn a lesson. You should be the lesson for those people… and be able to say, ‘This is my worth.’ We should not allow ourselves to be fooled. And if you don’t want to be fooled, you really have to love yourself and know your worth.”
Meanwhile, VMB is the newest content streaming platform by Viva, built for fast-paced and on-the-go mobile viewing.
Aside from “Akin Ka Lang,” viewers can also watch “Elisa: Batang Kabit” and “Maid for Revenge.”
