MANILA, Philippines — Dawn Chang’s search for her biological father could make a compelling plot for a screenplay or a book.

Sometime in 2011, shortly after landing a job as a parade dancer at Hong Kong Disneyland and while she was in Australia, she began searching for her father’s name on Google.

“I was directed to LinkedIn Australia. I was 21 or 22 at that time. So, pinili ko yung 40-plus (age) pataas. Three of them replied to my query,” she recalled to The STAR in an interview for TV5’s dating show, “Love On The Clock,” where she is one of the hosts. “But the others stopped responding when I said I was looking for my father, except for one.”

She did it “out of boredom.” “I never really met my father. So, I don’t feel any longing because I have no idea who he was. I’m just curious,” said she.

Dawn mentioned her name and her mother’s in an e-mail to him and said, “If these names are familiar, let me know.”

The man replied, “Neither your name nor your mother’s is familiar. But we have the same surname. So, maybe we have a connection along the way. Who’s your father?”

“‘How do I tell him that I am really looking for my father?’ I didn’t want also to drag anyone into my business. I just don’t want to hassle anyone. So, I told him, if you don’t know anything about my story, I apologize. Just ignore my message,” Dawn recalled.

But he e-mailed back and asked if they could meet up. She was skeptical at first and declined. “He replied and said, it’s because we have very similar events in our lives. Medyo kinabahan ako. Parang nagkaroon ng one percent chance or hope yung heart ko.”

The meetup nevertheless took place, but as they spoke, they realized that the events in their lives didn’t align. Seeking clarity, they decided to undergo a DNA test to settle the matter. “It took 10 days to get the results. And when the results arrived, it stated that the man tested blah blah cannot be excluded as the biological father of the child tested with the pathological percentage of 99.9. ‘Oh my gosh!’”

Dawn burst into tears at what she described as a “very surreal moment.” “That’s why, when you asked me about the greatest miracle in my life, this is it.”

She eventually became an Australian citizen through her dad, Vincent. “Now, I have two passports,” she said.

The former “Pinoy Big Brother” housemate has maintained a good relationship with her father as well as her half-siblings. “The eldest, in fact, who’s one year younger than me, became my best friend.”

When asked about the reaction of her mother, she said, “My mom is a lesbian. She doesn’t want to talk about it. Every time I asked her, ‘How did you get pregnant?’ Because she’s been a lesbian ever since. ‘Ay naku,’ gaganyan lang siya akin.”

Moreover, outside showbiz, Dawn is an entrepreneur who just opened her DC Delights café in Quezon City, which serves cookies and coffee.

The first Filipino reality dating series filmed entirely in Hong Kong, “Love on The Clock,” meanwhile, aired on tvN Asia and TV5. The show is also streaming on TV5’s YouTube channel.

Aside from Dawn, Juancho Trivino also served as the host.

The daters in the show include Pupa Dadivas, Victoria Fabella, Dani Buenvenida, Jomari Angeles, Ron Angeles and Polo Laurel.

The show’s “game changers,” JC Alcantara and Alexa San Agustin, recently joined them.

“Love on The Clock” was produced in partnership with Hong Kong Tourism Board and tvN Asia and featured various tourist spots in Hong Kong, such as the Clock Tower, Tsim Sha Tsui, Peak Tram and Victoria Peak, Buns 2020, Go Park Aqua and other attractions.
