Barbie Forteza opens up on what makes her heart ‘whole’

MANILA, Philippines — Dubbed GMA’s “Primetime Princess,” Barbie Forteza continues to prove why she more than deserves the crown.

Her breakout role as Klay Infantes in “Maria Clara at Ibarra” (2022) — a Gen Z nursing student who finds herself transported via a magical portal into the world of Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo novels — catapulted her to superstardom.

Since then, she has delivered one hit after another, including “Pulang Araw,” “Maging Sino Ka Man” and the ongoing “Beauty Empire.”

Now, Barbie takes her star power to the global stage as she headlines Netflix’s campy comedy-drama “Kontrabida Academy,” where she shares the screen with some of the industry’s most iconic villains.

(As of this writing, it ranks as the No. 3 Most Watched Movie on Netflix Philippines.)

Petite at just five feet tall, Barbie stands as one of the true “giants” of GMA’s primetime roster.

We recently caught up with the ever-grounded star to talk about her craft, the new skill she’s unlocked, her “whole” heart, and what truly keeps her going.

You’re now widely recognized as GMA’s “Primetime Princess.” From “Maria Clara at Ibarra” to “Beauty Empire,” what types of roles challenge you the most? Which ones feel most natural?

“All of them were challenging in their own way, especially with the physical and emotional demands each role required. Surprisingly, I’ve found that I’m quite comfortable hosting — whether it’s formal events or just a sit-down interview. I really enjoy my ‘Coffee Talk’ segment on my vlog. I love getting to know people and hyping up a show. As for acting, I intentionally avoid getting too comfortable in any role. I always aim to bring something new and authentic to the table.”

Does the title “Primetime Princess” come with pressure?

“Being recognized by my home network and the people I respect means the world to me. I carry that title with pride, gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility.”

Have you become more selective in choosing your roles?

“After 16 years in the industry and saying yes to almost everything, I’ve come to realize that my work is my legacy. So now, I’m more mindful about the projects I accept and the characters I portray.”

What’s your process when preparing for a role?

“I always start with the script. I build my character’s arc and backstory, then look for references from films and actresses who embody the vibe of the role I’m working on.”

You are the star of the new Netflix movie “Kontrabida Academy.” How did that opportunity come about?

“If I remember correctly, direk Chris Martinez set up a Zoom meeting to discuss the project because he really wanted me for the role of Gigi/Gia. Later, I found out from Ms. Eugene Domingo that the role had been offered to others, but things didn’t pan out. I’m incredibly grateful that direk Chris and Unitel thought of me and considered me for the part. I said yes right away — and I’m so happy I did.”

What was it like working alongside some of the industry’s top kontrabidas?

“There was one shoot day when all the kontrabida icons were on set, and I messaged my Ate Abby saying, ‘Bessy, I think I made it.’ To be surrounded by artists I’ve looked up to — masters of their craft — and to get to know them personally was such a surreal moment. I’ll never forget that day.”

How do you unwind and de-stress?

“I enjoy running, reading a book in a nice café and just people-watching.”

How long do you see yourself in showbiz?

“Until the fire in me burns out.”

Have you ventured into any businesses aside from acting?

“I’ve always dreamed of having my own little café. Hopefully, that dream won’t stay a dream much longer.”

Last two questions. What’s the status of your heart these days? Are you dating or entertaining suitors?

“My heart has always been whole. I’ve always been in love with my job, inspired by my family, and I make sure to spoil myself. I honestly can’t ask for more.”
