'Swiped' director breaks down film on Bumble CEO
MANILA, Philippines — Bumble chief executive officer Whitney Wolfe Herd gets her own biopic, courtesy of Rachel Lee Goldenberg's "Swiped."
Lily James portrays Wolfe during her early days marketing the dating app Tinder. The biopic shows Wolfe's struggles in the male-dominated company and the eventual founding of Bumble, which she heads to this day.
"Swiped" sees the evolution of both dating apps through how Wolfe, as a woman, experiences the culture and environment of the tech industry — a setting where women at the time rarely flourished.
Philstar.com asked Goldenberg why she went with a direction placing viewers in Wolfe's eyes, as opposed to simply detailing the origins of Tinder and Bumble.
Goldenberg began by saying her favorite films were about true stories that have perspectives and themes, not just full of facts like a Wikipedia page.
The director was inspired by Wolfe's story of trying to level the playing field in an industry that is dominated by the opposite sex.
"[She started] in one place culturally but played into the 'boys club' and succeeded by working within the sort of 'Tinder culture,' Goldenberg continued. "At the end, she sort of questions all that and is willing to risk it all for what she feels is right."
"That through line was the arc that the rest of the film was built around to me," Goldenberg added.
The director noted that while she was fascinated about how Tinder and Bumble came about, she was drawn in by Wolfe's internal arc.
"Swiped" begins streaming on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ on September 19.
