Why The CompanY’s Bente performance went viral

Veteran vocal ensemble The CompanY has proven that after four decades in the music industry, they still have the ability to captivate audiences across generations.
During their 40th anniversary concert on June 14 at The Theatre at Solaire in Parañaque City, the group debuted a new song titled Bente, an homage to SB19’s hit single Gento. The performance has since gone viral, amassing more than 1.3 million views on YouTube within days and drawing widespread acclaim for its clever blend of parody and cultural commentary.
Bente takes the infectious beat and structure of Gento and transforms it into a lighthearted tribute to the privileges of senior citizens, in particular the 20 percent discount mandated by Philippine law. The lyrics reference common experiences among older Filipinos, including free movies, restaurant perks and discounts at pharmacies.
During the live performance, the audience responded with enthusiastic laughter, applause and spontaneous standing ovations, signaling that the group had struck a resonant chord.
Online reactions were swift and overwhelmingly positive. Many long-time fans praised The CompanY for their ability to stay relevant while showcasing their trademark vocal harmonies. A Facebook user commented, “This is genius. Only The CompanY can turn a senior citizen discount into a national anthem.” Another wrote, “I’m 62, and this made me feel cool again. Thank you for reminding us that aging can be fun.”
Beyond their core audience, younger viewers also embraced the performance. Several fans of SB19 — known collectively as A’TIN — expressed admiration for the respectful and humorous take on the original hit. “This is how you pay tribute,” one YouTube comment read. “They didn’t just parody Gento, they elevated it with their own flavor.”
Another viewer remarked, “My mom and I were both dancing to this. I never thought a song about discounts could be this catchy.”
The CompanY, formed in 1985, has built a reputation as one of the Philippines’ most enduring vocal groups, known for their a cappella arrangements, pop and jazz stylings, and witty original compositions.
Their 40th anniversary concert featured many of their signature hits, but it was Bente that quickly emerged as the evening’s standout moment. Clips of the performance circulated widely on Facebook and TikTok, garnering tens of thousands of shares within hours.
In interviews after the concert, the group described Bente as a spontaneous idea born out of their admiration for SB19’s influence on the current generation of OPM listeners.
“We wanted to celebrate the success of Gento and also poke fun at ourselves,” said founding member Moy Ortiz.
“We’ve reached an age where these privileges matter, so why not sing about it?”
Other members shared that they were surprised by the speed at which the song gained traction online.
Commenters have also highlighted the song’s positive message about aging. One Facebook post with thousands of likes read, “This is the first time I’ve seen a song that treats senior citizenship as something to be proud of instead of a burden.” Another noted, “At a time when everything feels divided, this is something everyone can laugh about together.”
Industry observers say the viral appeal of Bente illustrates how legacy acts can maintain cultural relevance by engaging authentically with contemporary trends. Entertainment columnist Liza Sanchez wrote, “The CompanY has always been adept at reinventing themselves. Bente shows that they understand both the nostalgia of their original audience and the humor that resonates with today’s internet culture.”
The group has since been inundated with requests to release an official recording of the song.
“Please put this on Spotify,” one YouTube user pleaded. “We want to stream this on repeat.” Others have suggested producing a dedicated music video, pointing out that the song has the potential to become a full-fledged viral anthem.
As of this week, the performance continues to gain momentum, with view counts and shares increasing daily. For The CompanY, it underscores their unique position in Filipino music as artists who can evolve without losing the essence of what made them beloved in the first place.
With their 40th anniversary celebrations still underway, the group shows no signs of slowing down. “We’re just happy people are enjoying the song,” Ortiz said. “At the end of the day, music is about connection and joy, and if Bente brings that to people, that’s all we could ask for.”
