Rian Johnson talks about 'nomadic' existence, 'Knives Out,' 'Poker Face'

MANILA, Philippines — Filmmaker Rian Johnson believes the two fictional characters he created, Benoit Blanc and Charlie Cale, would get along if they crossed paths in real life.
Johnson received two Oscar nominations for the screenplays of "Knives Out" movies involving Blanc, a private detective portrayed by Daniel Craig.
The director is the showrunner of crime comedy-drama series "Poker Face," which follows Natasha Lyonne's Cale, a nomad with the innate ability to tell if someone is lying — or in her own words, call out bulls**t.
In an exclusive interview with Philstar.com, Johnson said Blanc and Cale would "get on like a house on fire" and be great friends.
He pointed out that Lyonne has a cameo in "Glass Onion," where she plays "Among Us" against Blanc, Stephen Sondheim, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Angela Lansbury (the latter who played Jessica Fletcher in "Murder, She Wrote").
In that regard, Lyonne exists as an actor in the "Knives Out" world, and Craig would likely be the same in "Poker Face."

"Charlie would probably be freaked out if she saw Daniel Craig walking down the street," Johnson quipped. "I don't know how we do the math of getting them together. I have a feeling they would have a beer and have a really wonderful time together. God help the criminal who commits a crime [with them around]."
The second season of "Poker Face" sees Cale free from mob threats, and every episode will now see her questioning whether each place she visits can become her new home.
Johnson compared Cale's nomadic nature to his life as a filmmaker, forming relationships in each new production he makes, "It's something I can very much relate to, you get into a pattern in your life, and long term connections and roots become very important to you."
He acknowledged an addictiveness to a nomadic existence, but pointed out that the show still commits to its "case-of-the-week" format.
The director is currently finishing up post-production of the third "Knives Out" movie, "Wake Up Dead Man," which sees Craig joined by Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.
The second season of "Poker Face" airs in the Philippines every Wednesday, at 9:45 p.m., on ROCK Entertainment.
