Dingdong and Jayda Avanzado compare music eras
It wasn’t hard for Jayda Avanzado to admit her past romance with Darren Espanto even though her dad, Dingdong Avanzado, was seated beside her during their recent guest appearance on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.” She confessed that she had not talked about it with her dad before.
“To be honest, I don’t think I ever directly talked about it (to him). Siguro ngayon lang dito mapag-uusapan,” laughed Jayda after I brought up my previous interview with Darren who revealed their romantic past.
“When it comes to things like that, sometimes I don’t feel the need to tell (to dad) but eventually we do talk about it as time passes.
“Yes, we had a thing, you could say that,” added Jayda regarding her and Darren’s past love affair.
Given Jayda’s talent and beauty, Dingdong knows boys admire his daughter. “There were attempts (to court her) in the beginning then after a while, I don’t know the right words but probably they had second thoughts or they chickened out because she has a strong personality and she got a good head above her shoulders.
“I trust that she will choose well and you know, it’s normal that you get to meet boys and then you’ll like each other. Ang sinasabi ko lang sa kanya is to know her responsibilities, know her priorities, and enjoy life.”
Dingdong never denied that he had his fair share of a colorful past in his younger years while at the peak of his music career. He said Jayda had an idea about the kind of life he had before he met Jessa Zaragoza — his wife and Jayda’s mom.
As a father, Dingdong is particularly concerned about his daughter’s well-being. “It would be a lie for any father not to show concern for his daughter. Ako, looking at my past at may nagsasabi na pambayad utang (anak na babae) pero I don’t let that take over, whatever it is. May kanya-kanya namang buhay pero ako I make sure na kinakausap ko si Jayda and I always present to her mga perspective ng guy so she knows what runs in the guy’s head.”
Father and daughter are part of the local music scene yet in two different generations. I asked Jayda how difficult it is to be a star today. Also, I wanted to hear from Dingdong how it was to be a singing star some decades ago.
Jayda believes the music industry now is more fast-paced with trends coming and going in the blink of an eye.
“I would say the turnover time in the music industry right now, napakabilis, Tito Boy. Kung anuman ‘yung sikat itong week, baka iba na by next week, and there’s a constant fight for relevance,” remarked Jayda. “But I’d like to look at that challenge and play with the hand that I am dealt with and the resources I have.
“One has to be ready and to always think of the kind of market. But at the end of the day, I still believe in sticking to your guns and what’s authentic to you. Napansin ko ang vina-value ng mga tao ngayon is authenticity,” continued Jayda, who apart from singing, is also into songwriting.
Her dad, on the other hand, said there weren’t so many paths to fame in his time compared to today. Television and radio were perfect vehicles to achieve stardom.
“Ilan lang ang platforms noon. There was only TV, radio. When you go through that, makikita ka na because everybody’s tuned in there. Now ang daming pwedeng puntahan ng tao. Pwedeng sikat ka sa isang grupo pero hindi ka kilala sa isang grupo ng society. Sometimes, you already have 20 million (followers) but there are still people clueless about who you are,” observed Dingdong whose contemporaries in music were Ogie Alcasid, Janno Gibbs, and Ariel Rivera.
Father and daughter agreed that there’s no greater competition than one’s self. The latter keeps in mind that she is only as good as her last project while the former deems it best to continue improving and harnessing one’s talent.
If there is something that father and daughter want to ask each other, what would it be?
“What do you think is the secret to success?” was Jayda’s question to Dingdong who replied, “Staying humble.”
Dingdong, in turn, asked Jayda, “Ano ang fallback mo just in case you don’t make it?”
“Honestly for me, as a young adult I have to think about that. I still like to pursue something creative so I would like to do behind the scenes like becoming a director or an author because I love writing,” she responded.
