The tune Segundo Seguro dropped only a few days ago but it is already showing unusual strength as it early on entered the Spotify chart with over three million streams. Written and performed by Arthur Nery, the song is the newest addition to the heartthrob from Cagayan de Oro’s growing repertoire of music for failed relationships.

Now Segundo Seguro is merely a single and not a full-length album like those breakup epics we recently got, The Tortured Poets Department by Taylor Swift and Eternal Sunshine by Ariana Grande. Still, I must say that singer and songwriter Arthur did come up with what I think is one of the most affecting of painful breakup songs.

Check out what he sings in the lyrics with his pleading tones:

“Yakap ka na lang ‘pag aalis ka na/ ‘di na kailangan napag-usapan pa/ kasi ibang daan ang ‘yong nais na tahakin/ ang alam ko ay yung sa ‘tin lang/ kahit sa pagbitiw ang pakiramdam ‘ko’y gumagaan sa init ng bawat segundo/ siguro ay nag-aalinlangan ka pang umalis.”

“Just hold me before you leave. There is nothing more to talk about. You want a different life, but all I know is what was ours. The heat of every second lightens when I feel you hesitate as you let me go.”

You know how masochistic Pinoys can be as far as broken hearts are concerned. We just adore wallowing in the blood, sweat, tears and whatever that comes out of the agony of our hurting tickers and Arthur has turned out to be a master of music for emotional good-byes. Take note, take note, those same sentiments were what gave him his over 200 million streamer Pagsamo.

The desperate lover of Pagsamo talks about “Mga kahapon na ‘di na kayang ayusin ng lambing.” Ouch! “Ba’t pa ipapaalala, ‘di rin naman panghahawakan/ ba’t ba ipipilit/ kung di naman tayo ang para sa isa’t-isa…/ oh, ba’t di sumang-ayon sa atin ang panahon.”

Arthur was one of the so-called harana boys who emerged with their new take on the traditional Filipino love song shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. With the worldwide population confined at home in isolation and the entertainment business at a stand-still, these young singers and songwriters found a ready audience on the web for their mostly softly crooned falsetto adorned love songs with jazzy strains.

It is now two years later and Arthur has turned out to be one of the most successful among them. It is proof of his talent and audience appeal that with the pandemic now mercifully over and life has become a new normal, he remains on the scene. Although seemingly still reclusive, he has transitioned into doing collabs with other artists and into performing in concert tours. He is now working on his next album of which Segundo Seguro is the first single release.

Arthur really went full blast with the recrimination for his bridge. “It is dusk again/ who you are with you have secretly chosen from long ago/ where does that leave me? Waiting for you/ in the unfinished past or in the uncertain end.”

Now, now, please don’t forget that breakup songs are not only what Arthur does well. He has already amassed a number of other hits, and these are about love of various types.

There are the usual “I love you” tunes like Isa Lang with 180 million streams; a kind of “I will be here for you, love” in Higa with 170 million streams; a two-timing kind in his Take All the Love with 116 million streams; plus others.
