News5 adds two more seasoned journalists to its roster
Ruth Cabal now anchors TV5’s ‘Frontline Express’ every 3:15 p.m. on weekdays and ‘Frontline Sa Umaga’ starting May 6. She is welcomed to TV5 by its president and CEO Guido Zaballero and News5 chief Luchi Cruz Valdes. She started in the field decades ago via TV5 when it was still ABC5 (second from right in below photo).

In the advent of paid troll farms, “black ops” and fake news being peddled and packaged in the guise of legitimate news article formats, the need for real journalists is more vital than ever.

TV5 is not stopping to expand its news organization by bringing two more seasoned journalists into its roster. It is none other than Ruth Cabal and Andrei Felix who both came from CNN Philippines.

Ruth had started in the field decades ago when TV5 was still ABC5. She then went on to be a proud Kapuso before making her mark with CNN Philippines as the anchor of “Newsroom Ngayon.”

Andrei also started with ABS-CBN and was even part of the much-loved morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda” and also made his mark in the sports industry.

With News5, both journalists are having a good package as Ruth is anchoring “Frontline Express” every 3:15 p.m. on weekdays and “Frontline Sa Umaga” along with Andrei and Jes delos Santos starting May 6.

Andrei Felix, who joins Ruth in ‘Frontline sa Umaga,’ also gets a warm welcome from TV5 execs Guido and Luchi. He will still do sports news but will focus more on hard news stories that will benefit our kababayan.

Both were welcomed by the very humble TV5 president and CEO Guido Zaballero and News5 chief Luchi Cruz Valdes, who told us, “For me, it’s nothing more than going from strength to strength. How can you go wrong with just making every effort, every day with every opportunity to become a stronger news organization?”

Just at the start of the year, Peabody awardee Jiggy Manicad joined the banner news program “Frontline Pilipinas.” Luchi had this to say about Jiggy joining News5, “Dito sa pagpasok ni Jiggy Manicad, talagang great value added ito. Alam naman natin iyong journalistic track record ni Jiggy.

“Jiggy is a face of news that packs in all the punch para mapakita lalo sa manonood natin na seryoso tayo sa paghatid ng balitang kumpletos rekados at mabilis ang pagkuha. Diyan kilala si Jiggy.”

The ratings of News5’s flagship program, according to Nielsen, is showing an impressive uptick in the past two years and has been gaining momentum and building a loyal news following on the free-to-air (FTA) platform.

It is now the undisputed second-highest rating news program on free TV next to GMA’s “24 Oras.” With this, Luchi is not stopping to service our countrymen and strengthen legitimate storytelling all the more by adding seasoned journalists to its roster.

She said, “We are looking for people who know what they’re talking about, who ask questions that need to be asked, who are gung ho for the news. God knows how much we need journalism all the more in this time.”

Andrei, on the other hand, told us that he will still do sports news but will now focus more on hard news stories that will benefit our kababayan.

He is also excited to start this new chapter with TV5, saying, “from the very beginning, they made me feel so at home. It is an honor for me na maging kasangga sa pagbabalita sa ‘Frontline.’”

(Catch Andrei Felix starting April 27 on “Frontline Pilipinas Weekend” and on May 6 on “Frontline sa Umaga.”)
