Jo Koy 'feels bad, hurt' over Golden Globes 2024 hosting criticisms
MANILA, Philippines — Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy has responded to criticism of his hosting of the 2024 Golden Globes, which many viewers found to be flat and unfunny at times.
Jo Koy's opening monologue received a lukewarm reception from the star-studded crowd, and it only got worse from there after he went off-script to say he didn't write some of the jokes the audience weren't laughing at.
"Some I wrote, some other people wrote," Jo Koy said during the ceremony. "Yes, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You're kidding me, right? Slow down, I wrote some of these and they are the ones you are laughing at."
The disastrous attempts went viral further after Jo Koy attempted to make a joke about Taylor Swift's attendance, noting there are less camera shots of her at the Globes compared to American football games, which then cut to Swift slowly sipping her drink.
The comedian appeared on "Good Morning America" the day after the Globes, which was dominated by Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," where he admitted being hurt by the criticism he's been receiving from the historic hosting stint.
It was the first time in the Globes' tumultuous history that it was hosted by someone of Filipino descent.
"I had fun. You know, it was a moment that I'll always remember," he said. "It's a tough room. It was a hard job, I'm not going to lie... I'd be lying if [I said] it doesn't hurt. I hit a moment there where I was like, 'Ah'."
Jo Koy admitted hosting was tough, comparing it to his traditional stand-up comic style. He also reiterated the Globes team only had 10 days to write his monologue, calling it a "crash course."

The comedian also acknowledged his joke toward Swift was flat and weird, though he insisted he was trying to take a jab at the National Football League always cutting to Swift during her attendance at games rather than at the singer herself.
Given that, he is not sure if he will immediately give hosting another go, "That's a tough gig, I'm not going to lie. I love the art of standup. It was cool the opportunity came to me, but hosting is just a beast. That's about it... I wanted to give a little bit more of me, and I fell a little short. That's all."
Actress-comedienne Whoopi Goldberg, who has hosted the Oscars four times, came to Jo Koy's defense on her show "The View" and reiterated how brutal hosting an awards show can be.
"If you don't know the room, if you've not been in these rooms before and you're sort of thrust out there. It's hit or miss," Goldberg said.
The comedienne shared her admiration and praise for Jo Koy as a stand-up comedian, and wondered where it could have gone for him on the night.
"Oppenheimer" took home five awards including Best Film - Drama, Best Director for Nolan, and acting plums for stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey, Jr.
On the television front, HBO's "Succession" was the big winner as it won Best Series - Drama and saw awards for actors Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Matthew Madfadyen.
"The Bear" and "Beef" both won three awards, dominating the Comedy-Musical Series and Limited/Anthology Series-TV Movie categories of the Globes.
