Rob Gomez honors his former actress-mom in showbiz career
Rob Gomez is one of the two dashing and dependable leading men of Herlene Budol in Magandang Dilag. The other is Benjamin Alves. Both, along with the ensemble cast, come together for Herlene’s first venture into a full drama TV series.
Given the comedienne-turned-beauty queen’s sunny disposition and work commitment, Rob could attest to the easy-breezy mood working with Herlene for the GMA Afternoon Prime series.
“Hindi naman po mahirap maka-trabaho si Herlene (It wasn’t difficult to work with her),” he said of the female co-star in a recent press conference. “First of all, she became a friend, like tropa-tropa. She’s really chill like that and she’s always fun to be around.”
This served as a jumping-off point for him and her to get “to talk properly,” recalled Rob, and from there, on set, “we had fun making jokes — everyone of us.”
Although challenges come with any creative territory, one could glean upon that work was generally smooth-sailing for the cast and crew.
“In terms of acting, we are all impressed by the things she has shown,” shared Rob his thoughts about the work of Herlene as Gigi, a lady with the most optimistic attitude in life, in Magandang Dilag. The latter is her transition from doing comedy to drama, and from headlining a weekend drama anthology to a full TV series.
“(I’m) very excited and very honored to be here,” said Rob during the press event.
Again, Rob is taking on the leading man role via Jared Illusorio, described in some interviews as not the typical knight in shining armor for the character’s villain-narcissistic tendency. His Jared is a prominent triathlete and endorser as well as a stark contrast to the roles Rob has played before.
In GMA online exclusives, Rob shared that Jared is the younger brother of Magnus, a rising politician, played by Adrian Alandy. “He’s our instigator, siya ang aaway kay Gigi,” said the young actor and added that Jared is the crush of Gigi and the cause of her heartbreak.
As the narrative thickens and progresses, Jared’s real intentions will be revealed, especially when Benjamin’s Atty. Eric Oliveros enters the picture and dominates the scene.
According to Benjamin, Gigi might have a hard time choosing between Eric and Jared to be the man in her life. They are both determined to win her heart. The Sparkle GMA Artist Center actor said the Eric-Gigi-Jared love triangle is something viewers should look forward to and follow till the end.
Rob, in a GMA Regional TV interview, said that it’s his first time to have a tall leading lady. Herlene stands 5’9” tall. With his 5’11” height, he said, “Halos na hindi ako nag-look down,” and found Herlene “naturally funny.”
With the show’s title, Magandang Dilag or beautiful lady in English, Rob shared, in a GMA Pinoy TV quick chat, that “Ngayon po ang pinaka-magandang dilag ng buhay ko, ang nanay ko, my mom (I consider my mother the magandang dilag in my life). I look up to her so much… I use her screen name kasi Kate Gomez yung sa kanya. So, in honor of her, I use it.”
Rob is the son of former actress Kate Gomez, nephew of Gary Estrada and grandson of the late veteran actor George Estregan. He belongs to the Ejercito-Estrada showbiz clan, started and led by former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada.
As for the qualities of a magandang dilag, Rob said, in the same quick chat interview, she should be “nice in general.”
“You know, you don’t have to be rude all the time. ‘Pag mainit siguro ang ulo mo, dun ka ma-te-test na lang kung hanggang saan ba talaga yung pasensya mo, di ba? (When she is angry and how she handles it or keeps her temper is a test of her patience),” added he.
With his Jared, Rob carries on to show and share his gift to essay diverse and engaging roles — and build his momentum as a leading man and versatile actor.
