TikTok loves Andrew E

TikTok is a social media platform, where users can upload short videos of themselves singing, dancing, doing comedy skits, or whatever you can shoot as in naglalaba, naliligo, etc,. TikTok is heaven sent to this world of ours, that is mostly populated by frustrated entertainers. Who needs a director or a producer or a cameraman, etc., when all you need is a mobile phone and the TikTok app. Upload a video and hurray! You are a star.

Now how does Andrew E figure in the realm of TikTok? TikTokkers, who like to dance, need music and Andrew E has a lot of those. Not just music to dance to, but hit songs with a great beat and naughty, naughty lyrics. Nobody knows who did it first, but somebody remembered his old hits and used the track on a TikTok video. It came out good. Others followed and the resurgence of Andrew E was on its way.

I do not think that even Andrew E himself ever imagined that more than 30 years later, he would still be riding high as a hitmaker. Way back in 1990, Andrew made No. 1 in the charts with a rap tune titled Humanap Ka ng Pangit. The tune was such a big seller that Viva Films turned it into a movie that also launched Andrew E as an actor.

More hit songs and blockbuster comedies followed over the years. Then, like everybody in the entertainment business, Andrew E matured into a respected artist who could rest on his laurels and record and perform only when he felt like it. He did not count though on the arrival of TikTok.

Riding high at the moment as the go-to dancing and lip-synching tune on TikTok is Andrew Ford Medina. Think almost a million hits and over two million likes just for one video. And there are a lot of other videos with Andrew Ford Medina as the soundtrack that I decided to stop counting. It is no wonder then that Andrew Ford Medina became hot and trending again after 30 years.

By the way, Andrew E’s real name is Andrew Ford Valentino Espiritu. He became Andrew E when he became a club DJ. It was while he was manning the boards at Euphoria that he was discovered by music icon Ramon Jacinto and brought to Viva. And the rest is history. As the numbers on TikTok show, this is all fact. Not tsismis. He turned 55 years old on the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle last July 30.
