'The Powerpuff Girls' creator to reboot animated series

MANILA, Philippines — Animator Craig McCracken is developing a new reboot of "The Powerpuff Girls," the popular animated series he created in 1998.

The new reboot is part of a project to create shows for Hanna-Barbera's European division, alongside another reboot of McCracken's well-liked show, "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends."

"So excited to partner with an incredible studio to develop new characters & stories for two of my favorite creations!" McCracken said on Twitter after the announcement was publicized.

"The Powerpuff Girls" reboot will again follow the titular sisters Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as they go up against new and familiar villains while they balance life as preschoolers.

Meanwhile the "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" reboot will be a new preschool animated series featuring a new cast of "imaginary friends."

Sam Register, president of Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, said that McCracken's homecoming was opportunity that could not be passed up — the animator began his work at Hanna-Barbera as an art director 30 years ago.

“Along with his unparalleled sense of fun and imagination, he’s bringing two of his greatest works and we are so excited for these characters to be a part of the new legacy taking shape at the studio,” Register added.

The original "The Powerpuff Girls" ran for 78 episodes on Cartoon Network, ending in 2005. McCracken also directed "The Powerpuff Girls Movie" in 2002 which served as a prequel to his series.

The show had an anime version, "Powerpuff Girls Z," which ran for 52 episodes. The original show saw its first reboot in 2016 and ended after three seasons in 2019.

A live-action version of "The Powerpuff Girls" is currently in development on the American channel The CW but is facing a lot of reworking after the pilot and script received criticism last year.

The original "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" was on Cartoon Network for six seasons beginning 2004, winning six Emmy Awards and five Annie Awards.
