Kapuso reporters Oscar Oida and Mav Gonzales take a breather from covering hard news every Tuesday night at 11:30 as they host On Record. The GMA Public Affairs program is Oscar and Mav’s platform to cheer up and inform viewers.

“It will tell information behind eye-catching videos and pictures,” said Oscar in a virtual group interview. “You know these days it is important to know the stories behind the images and visuals.” This is true since viewer-netizens tend to comment easily on social media content they access daily. As much as the program brings cheer to everyone, it also provides the latter the needed context.

“They take things as they are when they see them on social media,” shared Mav about the young audiences, who are encouraged to verify and discern information first before they decide to share and click it.

“Maybe with On Record, they can see, let’s say, that the caption is not the full story,” she added. “There’s a much bigger story in the stories they see. Like what GMA says in its campaign, ‘Think before you click,’ I hope through On Record, it will be inculcated more in audiences, particularly the young netizens (and they are encouraged) to practice it.” This informs consumers of visual and written content to be critical and inspires them to become one.

“It’s important to have critical thinking given the number of misinformation that circulates on social media and other sources,” said Oscar. “Dati tsismis lang ng kapitbahay mo ang pinuproblema mo, ngayon may tsismis sa social media (Before we were just dealing with neighborhood gossips, now we deal with gossips on social media).”

Following the veteran reporter’s line of thought, being critical also serves as defense of information users from experiencing anxiety and stress brought about by misinformation and disinformation. Although On Record seems to advocate this, the program gives viewers hope and inspiration they need in these trying times. “Importante na kritikal tayo and at the same time we’re doing it in On Record na may sundot ng good vibes, hindi lang sundot but (the show) is full of good vibes. It is something new, good vibes is what we (the hosts) bring, and also inspiration and right information.”

According to the information given to media, On Record will present moments in life like the pleasant, the beautiful and the inspiring. These are captured on videos and photos that speak about “heroism, random acts of kindness and the secret life of pets.”

Asked if it’s a natural career progression for reporters to become hosts, Mav replied: “I hosted Chikiting Patrol on GMA 7. I grew up in this kind of work na nag-ho-host (ng) educational magazine show. Sobrang nakakatuwa talaga at naging news reporter ako, di ko na nagagawa yung ganito (hosting a show). I would mostly cover hard news. With On Record, I have the chance to host and cover more good vibes stories again. It’s a breath of fresh air and it is going like back to my roots when I was a child.”

As for Oscar, he sees the docu-magazine show as a blessing and an opportunity. “The career path of a reporter is what I have pursued,” said he. “(Hosting the show) is an opportunity that I have to embrace and pagyamanin.”

Make Oscar and Mav your “sources” of inspiring and good vibes videos and information.

(Tune in to On Record on GMA 7’s late-night Power Block after Saksi. It will also be available to viewers abroad beginning Feb. 27 on GMA News TV International. For the program guide, visit www.gmanetwork.com/international.)
