Epy Quizon has some advice to young actors

MANILA, Philippines — Epy Quizon has given some unsolicited advice to today’s young actors after having observed the kind of acting they deliver on screen.

“I am not talking about new actors in general but I can see that some of them have a weak foundation in acting,” Epy told The STAR on the sidelines of the recent opening of Lido Cocina Tsina at the upper ground level of Shaw Plaza One in Mandaluyong City. Epy is the director of the Chinese restaurant’s three-episode TVCs set to air sometime in September. 

Without naming names, he further said that he does not see in some of the newbie stars the kind of glow or aura the likes of Judy Ann Santos, Nora Aunor or Tirso Cruz possess.

“Parang kulang sa foundation ng craft ‘yung ibang mga bagong artista ngayon. Kumbaga, wala ‘yung ‘magic’ na gaya ng sa Superstar Nora or when you look at Tirso, there is this ‘magic’ in him. Judy Ann also has excellent acting ability. Dolphy (his dad) also had the gift. Magagaling talaga sila dahil kumbaga ‘yung foundation nila as actors ay buo.”

Epy agreed that good looks and the right timing are important for one to be a star but he suggests that newbies should first focus on nurturing their talent.

“(They should) learn the craft. If they think it’s enough to have that artistahin look to get into showbiz, well, it’s just one factor. So, I think it is best for any newcomer to undergo training or acting workshop to strengthen the foundation.”

When asked if talent searches and reality shows have something to do with it, Epy said, “Probably because of so many talent searches, nag-kakaroon ng mentality na, ‘Ah, pwedeng artista ito.’ Unlike before when actors were meticulously chosen, ang sasabihin pag napipili, ‘Ito magaling.’ But now, you would hear, ‘Ito pwede na.’”

According to Epy, it would be better if talent managers and directors make it a point to give them the proper training in acting.

“I admit, I was so stupid when I was just starting because I really don’t know how to act but I worked hard on it. The foundation of an artist is truly knowing what to do. They (new actors) should not depend solely on their looks or in their ability to cry.”

Besides, Epy said their hard work will eventually produce positive results. “If you are not born to act, then at least make an effort to practice and learn the craft so that the opportunity given to you won’t be wasted.”

These days, Epy is busy with acting and directing. He plays a gray character in the ABS-CBN fantasy series Hiwaga ng Kambat. Asked if it was intentional on his part to veer away from comedy, Epy replied, “Well, I love playing roles — whether for comedy or drama. The intention for me is to be flexible with anything I do; I want to keep exploring. I love doing different things.”

No wonder, Epy also takes on directorial projects like TVCs of different brands, including Lido Cocina Tsina. The TVC tells a heartwarming story of a family man who strives hard to prosper in life.

“We are honored to have Epy as the director of our very first TVC. He is very talented that he was able to put his own flavor to the concept,” said Lido president Annie Wong and added that the TVC will also highlight the heritage of the restaurant which started operations in 1936.

And the Lido legacy continues until the present time. The flavorful Pugon-Roasted Asado is considered to be the staple order in the establishment.
