Valentine’s with the stars
Filipinos are known for being romantic and love-obsessed. Our songs are some of the most heartfelt, heart-warming and sometimes, even the most heart-breaking. That need to “tell the people who matter that you love them” is seldom heard because many of us readily declare our love.
When we polled some of our Kapuso couples on their favorite romantic movies or dream Valentine’s date with their partner, they were quick to share their answers.
Unang Hirit host and Eat, Bulaga! dabarkads Luane Dy and Encantadia actor Carlo Gonzalez are self-avowed movie buffs, whose two favorite movies are The Notebook and The Choice.
“Carlo and I have seen them a lot of times already but I still cry every single time,” Luane said.
“If I were a romantic movie, I would be Serendipity,” Carlo said. “I would want my partner to see it because I want her to observe how fate works against the odds in different situations.”
GMA News reporter Mark Zambrano said that if he were a romantic movie, that he’d want his girlfriend, singer and songwriter Aicelle Santos to watch, he would be Sleepless in Seattle. The hit movie which starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan was a reboot of the classic film, An Affair to Remember.
“I’ve always been a hopeless romantic and the thought of having someone meant for you is just something I truly believe in. I want Aicelle to see it because just like the movie, the universe conspired to make us fall in love with each other,” Mark said.
“I remember watching A Walk To Remember and 50 First Dates alone, crying in the cinema and wondering when my true love will come,” Aicelle recalled. “Now that he’s here in my life, I’d like to watch those movies again with him and have him hug me when I cry.”
For actor and TV host Mikael Daez and beauty queen Megan Young, romantic movies aren’t on the top of their list.
“The first thing that comes to mind is the indie film Like Crazy, that won at Sundance several years ago,” Mikael said.
The movie, which starred Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, won a number of awards in 2011, including the Special Jury Prize for Jones, and Grand Jury Prize for director Drake Doremus.
“Sobrang intimate ng pagka-shoot ng director... actually sad yung story. Heart-breaking pero ang ganda nya. Marami kang mararamdaman,” Mikael said.
Megan couldn’t identify with any romantic movie, saying, “I swear I can’t answer that.” Her idea of a dream Valentine’s date, however, is fun and whimsical.
“Well, I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s so I guess having a dream one would be the best thing. It would probably being able to go to a park and have a buffet with Mikael with all our favorite food, and not get fat after. That’s the dream!” At present, Mikael and Megan star in GMA’s newest Afternoon Prime series The Stepdaughters.
Carlo’s dream date with Luane would be “a trip on a private plane to a distant private beach. We’d spend the whole day under the sun, of course, with delicious food.”
Mark and Aicelle’s dream date is also a beach getaway. “A week on a deserted island with our own private beach where we’ll have candlelit dinners and just cuddle under the stars all night long,” he said.
For Aicelle, it would be “dinner by the moonlit shore, stargazing and dancing to live jazz music.”
To paraphrase what the kid has said in Sleepless in Seattle, these Kapuso couples are MFEO — made for each other.
