Body Talk with Von Pessumal
Has he ever received any indecent proposal? ‘No, not really. I stay away from any kind of potential harm.’
How different is the discipline in basketball from that of other sports?
“All sports are similar in a way but I believe basketball has to be the most dynamic one of all simply because there are a countless numbers of ways a player can play the game.”
That’s Von Pessumal speaking, a Blue Eagle.
Von knows what he’s talking about, after all he has been playing basketball since he was around seven or eight years old when his father, Chandru Pessumal (an optometrist, like Von’s mother), would take him to watch basketball games.
“Ever since, I’ve been keeping basketball close to my heart,” said Von (an Aquarian born on Feb. 12, 1993; stands 6’2”; weighs 185 lbs.; and wears size L/XL shirt, L/XL briefs and size-13 shoes). “Growing up, I idolized Larry Fonacier of Ateneo. He was a great college player and I always appreciated his no-nonsense demeanor. I also looked up to Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks. I liked the way he used his intellect to be a better player.”
Since their parents are both doctors, Von and his three siblings were taught at a very young age that excelling at school was very important.
“Also, since my dad is full Indian (but born in the Philippines),” added Von, “it was obvious that we were somewhat different. However, I do believe that we remain more Filipino than Indian in the way we live.”
How long has he been a UAAP player and what does it take to graduate to professional basketball?
“I have been playing in the UAAP for the past eight years, three years in high school and five years in college. I’ve been in Ateneo all my life, from grade school to high school to college. I have learned a lot through the years. One important lesson that I learned is the value of communication,” shared Von who is taking up AB Communication.
“I sincerely believe that it takes more than just pure skill and talent to eventually become a professional basketball player. It takes a lot of hard work and mental consistency. I spend a lot of time in the gym working on my game. Working hard every day takes a toll not just on my body but also on my mind. But I do believe that if I put my mind to improving every single day, then eventually I will have what it takes to be a better basketball player.”
What kind of diet do you follow? What’s usually for breakfast, for lunch and for dinner; and, if any, snacks?
“I try my best to stay healthy. For breakfast, it’s usually fruits or sandwiches. For lunch and dinner, I try to eat a lot of chicken or beef. I stay away from anything fried. I prefer the chicken roasted, boiled or grilled. I avoid fast food. For snacks, I eat anything as long as it’s not unhealthy.”
