Obama's adventure to Alaskan wilderness to be aired this December
MANILA, Philippines - US President Barack Obama's Alaskan wilderness adventure with Bear Grylls for an episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls is set to air on Discovery Channel across Asia Pacific on December 18 at 10 p.m.
Last August, NBC announced that Obama will go up North and get his crash course in survival techniques from Grylls to raise awareness on the effects of climate change.
"President Obama will meet with Grylls while visiting Alaska to observe the effects of climate change on the area. The two will then come together in the Alaskan Wilderness," NBC's release reads.
In an interview with Discovery Channel, Grylls said Obama is a dad just like him, who cares about preserving the planet for their children and the future children of the earth.
"He’s a dad, and he wants to preserve the planet for his children’s future and I feel exactly the same way. I spend all of my life charging around the world and all of these wildernesses and I see the harsh reality of climate change close up," he said in an interview with Discovery Channel.
For the episode, Obama got up close and personal with nature, treaded on a receding glacier and talked with people threatened by the effects of climate change.
Grylls is known for his adventures. In his series, he takes famous personalities along with him and push their minds and bodies to the limit in these extreme environments to successfully complete their journey, including having them drink their own pee.
When asked if he made Obama do it, he said, "There’s a big petition on the White House saying, “You got to get the president to drink his own pee.” I said, I’m not going to ask you to do that. And it was fun because we had a good conversation about it. “You tell me what is it with you and pee?”, “Why are you known for this?” And he wanted to understand the science again behind it.
Obama is the first US president to receive a crash course in survival techniques from Bear Grylls. This is the latest attempt by Obama to use the entertainment world to promote his missions.
