MANILA, Philippines - Ryan Rems Sarita did not expect the instant popularity he gained after joining and winning "It's Showtime's" "The Funny One" segment.
"Hindi ko naman po inakala na makikilala tayo ng ganito," he said in an interview on Wednesday. "Basta gusto lang natin makapagpasaya ng tao."
The former English instructor and call center agent bested other fellow aspiring comedians in the said competition, winning P1 million cash and his own segment in the ABS-CBN noontime variety show.
Ryan started his career in standup comedy in 2008, where he became part of Comedy Cartel. Until eventually he moved with Comedy Manila.
Comedy Manila is a group of entertainers who help each other prepare and improve their comedic stints.
"Actually hirap po ako sa noontime," he said about being a regular member of "It's Showtime." "'Yong materials ko sa noontime nag-tone down na po 'yon. Kung mapapanood n'yo po ako sa gabi, mapapa-wooh kayo."
Aside from this, ABS-CBN has given him a six-month contract. He's now being handled by Star Magic, the network's talent management arm.
When asked if he sees himself being part of a TV series, Ryan believes that he'll be an effective support character.
"Kaya kong pasikatin lalo 'yong lead actor 'pag ako ang support," he said, laughing.
"It's Showtime" airs from Monday to Saturday on ABS-CBN.
