Nightlife in Manila during Japanese Occupation
In the early ’40s, during the Japanese Occupation, nightlife in downtown Manila was alive... thanks to those clubs and bars. They were both established... like Trocadero, Taza de Oro, Tom’s Dixie... and newly opened.
Aside from singing and dancing and comedy skits, those clubs also offered good food. ‘Tempting Chinese dishes,’ ‘the finest Italian dishes,’ ‘lechon con salza del pais.’
The nightclub entertainers included Zarah and Bebe, Bayani and Nieves, Baby Jane, Lou Salvador & His MerryMakers, Cesar & His 14-piece Orchestra, Carmen Toledo and Miss Sweetness.
Like the stage shows, nightclubs provided entertainment to a population tired, weary and afraid of the war. — RKC
