Marooned on isolated island

Leah C. Salterio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - After airing four seasons with the Philippines as location, Survivor (US), the reality game show hosted by Jeff Probst, recently started its 30th season from San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. This is the fourth show that aired from Nicaragua, a place in North America that has a tropical climate.

Eighteen castaways are marooned in an isolated island where they must fend for themselves. For more than 30 days, they must look for food, build fire and construct a makeshift shelter that can withstand even rain. They must compete in challenges that allow them to win rewards for food and certain items.

Towards the second half of the competition, as the castaways are trimmed down, the tribes are merged into one. Challenges are played individually, so reward and immunity are also won respectively.

The 18 new castaways in Survivors: Worlds Apart are divided into three tribes according to their professions, with six members each. Masaya (White Collar) has members from the corporate world, Escameca (Blue Collar) has skilled workers and Nagarote (No Collar) has those with passion-based jobs. So far, three contestants have been voted out and left the competition.

Masaya tribe (White Collar) is composed of marketing director Joaquin Sourberbielle from New York, corporate executive Carolyn Rivera from Florida, Yahoo! employee Shirin Oskooi, media consultant Max Dawson, former talent agent assistant Tyler Fredrickson and retail buyer So Kim, all from California.

Escameca tribe (Blue Collar) has hairdresser Lindsey Cascaddan from Florida, postal worker Dan Foley from Maine, oil driller Mike Holloway from Texas, general contractor Rodney Lavoie Jr. from Massachusetts, state trooper Kelly Remington from New York and barrel racer Sierra Dawn Thomas from Utah.

Meanwhile, Nagarote tribe (No Collar) has jewelry designer Joe Anglim from Arizona, coconut vendor Vince Sly, law student Hali Ford, hearing advocate Nina Poersch, YouTube sensation Will Sims II and sailing instructor Jenn Brown, all from California.

After only three days, Masaya tribe faced the Tribal Council and So was voted out. The flame from her torch was extinguished and she was the first castaway to leave the competition.

Vince, a strong member from Nagarote tribe, left on the sixth day. Nina, also from Nagarote, was voted out on the eighth day. That leaves Nagarote with four remaining members, who will bravely compete against the two other tribes.

Although there was elimination, there were also teams which got their rewards and immunity from the challenges they did. For the first leg, Escameca and Nagarote got their rewards. For the second and third legs, Masaya and Escameca won.

Survivor: Worlds Apart airs its new episode every Thursday on Jack TV.

To date, aside from Nicaragua and the Philippines, Survivor (US) has been shot in Australia, Africa, Fiji, Marquesas, Borneo, Thailand, Pearl Islands, Vanuatu, Palau, Guatemala, Panama, Gabon, Cook Islands, Micronesia, Samoa, China, Cambodia, Malaysia and South Pacific.
