Rico Blanco willing to do a Rivermaya reunion?

Chuck Smith - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Mark Escueta said in a previous TV interview that he's willing to do a reunion project with fellow original Rivermaya members Nathan Azarcon, Bamboo Manalac, and Rico Blanco.

Is Rico—who became the band's frontman after its original lead singer Bamboo left in 1998—willing to reunite with his old Rivermaya bandmates?

The “Yugto” singer said he is “open to the possibility of a reunion with Rivermaya.”

“If someone can make it happen, if my boys are all interested, why not,” Rico said during the press conference his upcoming concert with Yeng Constantino and Gloc-9 titled “ICON: The Concert” on Monday.

He added: “If that doesn't happen, I'm okay. I'm happy creating new music. It's also a kick, I guess, for some people who want to be nostalgic and relive the past.”

Rico was a founding member of the alternative rock band Rivermaya from the early 90s until the late 2000s, which spawned numerous hits such as “Liwanag sa Dilim,” “214,” “Awit ng Kabataan,” and “Ulan.” He left the band in 2007 to start his solo music career.

Escueta is the only remaining original of Rivermaya.

Yet Rico explained he wouldn't go as far as initiating a reunion project with his former bandmates, saying “it's hard for me to exert so much effort into going backwards.”

“No offense to Rivermaya, I love everything we've accomplished and I'm proud of everything we've accomplished and I'm thankful because if it weren't for Rivermaya, I wouldn't be here,” Rico explained. “But siguro, ang wiring ko lang, I'm wired in such a way na I want to create new things and explore things that I haven't done yet.”

Part of that, he said, is collaborating with other artists he has not worked with. The upcoming “ICON” concert will be his first time to work with Yeng. Rico, meanwhile, has collaborated with Gloc-9 for the song “Magda,” which was released in 2013. “ICON: The Concert” will be held on November 21, Friday, 8 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

But Rico admits: “Definitely, there's always magic when you put those guys together.”

He added, "Kahit dalawa pa lang kami ni Nathan (Azarcon]) ang dami ng nangyaring magic, with Bamboo more. It's also exciting, but there are people I haven't worked with pa. I'm also curious about that."

Recently, 90s pop-rock band Eraserheads released two new songs more than 10 years after disbanding.
