Emmy nomine wears an Oliver Tolentino
MANILA, Philippines - Oliver Tolentino (OT) does it again — dress up a nominee, that is, again Mayim Bialik (photo) who wore an OT at the just-concluded Emmy Awards in which she competed for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for The Big Bang Theory. Every year since 2012, Bialik faced stiff competition, this time losing to Allison Janney (for Mom). The Big Bang Theory lost the Best Comedy plum to Modern Family.
It’s Bialik’s second time to wear an Oliver Tolentino to the Emmys. Oliver designed a radiant royal blue embroidered ball gown with sweetheart neckline, featuring pockets and embroidered see-through sleeves. The religious actress is known to adhere to Jewish modesty, so she wears only dresses below the knee and with sleeves. At last year’s Emmys, Bialik wore an emerald green OT gown that made it into international magazines and was discussed favorably by none other than Joan Rivers on Fashion Police.
When Funfare called Oliver at his L.A. home to congratulate him, we were surprised to learn that he made the gown in 72 hours, having just enough time for the fitting. Oliver said that it helped that Bialik knew all along she wanted a ball gown so at least that made his job easier.
So far, only Filipino designers Monique Lhuillier and Tolentino ever have dressed an Emmy nominee. Julia Louis-Dreyfus was in a Lhuillier when she won last year.
At the last Academy Awards, as Funfare previously reported, Oliver was the second Filipino designer ever to be worn. That was when director Jennifer Lee won for Frozen last year. The first was Pitoy Moreno who, 53 years ago, designed Rita Moreno’s gown when she won Best Actress (for West Side Story).
Oliver said that he’s coming home on Sept. 15 to work out of his Makati boutique for a month, meeting with future brides and long-time clients. He also carries ready-to-wear. (For more information, call [02] 8567088 or visit www.OliverTolentino.com.)
