JM de Guzman admits drug use: 'I lost control'

MANILA, Philippines – Actor JM de Guzman finally opened up on his long-rumored drug addiction.

 

In an interview with ABS-CBN's showbiz talk show “The Buzz” on Sunday, August 3, JM admitted taking drugs. He added it was the reason why he was gone from showbiz for over one year.

 

“Pinasok po ako sa rehab. Pinasok po ako sa rehab dahil unmanageable na ako. Gumamit ako ng droga. Sinubukan ko ang di dapat subukan,” he said.

 

He also said, “May mga kailangan akong ayusin sa sarili ko dahil nagkaproblema po ako. Naging iresponsable po ako. Nawala po yung disiplina ko. Lumaki po ulo ko. I lost control.”

 

JM starred in ABS-CBN's 2011 remake of the soap opera “Mula sa Puso.” He also led the cast of the afternoon shows “Angelito” Ang Batang Ama” and “Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto.”

 

However,  rumors of JM's drug use surfaced in 2013. 

 

JM's father Ronniel de Guzman later told the press that JM would take a hiatus from showbiz due to a “health problem.”

The 25-year-old actor shared he asked to be admitted in a rehabilitation center. “Nung una po actually, ako na rin ang nagpresenta. Sinabi ko na kailangan ko ng tulong. 'Iparehab n'yo ako, kung meron kayong alam na rehabilitation na pwede kong pasukan sana',” he said. 

 

JM added, “Mentally, hindi na ako makapagisip ng diretso. Hindi ko na mapagkatiwalaan yung mga sarili kong desisyon. Yung responsibilidad, nawawala na rin sa akin. Disiplina, wala na. Emotionally, hindi ko na kaya i-control.” 

 

But the actor, who started his career as a child star and later on starred in independent films and stage plays, said his ex-girlfriend had nothing to do with his drug use. JM added his drug use was one of the many reasons why they broke up.

 

“Sa mga isyu, sa mga ginawa ko sa sarili ko, wala pong kinalaman si Jessy Mendiola. Desisyon ko yun. Choices ko yung ginawa ko. And naging rason kung bakit kami naghiwalay,” he said. “Isa po yung sa mga maraming rason.” 

 

JM is excited to return to showbiz, particularly television. “Excited, kung mabibigyan ng chance,” he said.
