Silent Sanctuary gets Monodramatic

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Following the successful release of the first two singles off its album Monodramatic, Silent Sanctuary returns to its roots of bittersweet melodies with the release of the new single Sa’yo. The four-minute song, according to songwriter Sarkie Sarangay, was inspired by a friend’s story of being uncertain in love. It has two versions in the album, the full band and the orchestral version.

Silent Sanctuary is composed of Sarkie on vocals and guitars, Chino David on violin, Anjo Inacay on cello, Jason Rondero on bass and Allen Calixto on drums.

Sarkie said of the release of its third single: “Aside from fans requesting for it to be released, gustong-gusto rin talaga namin ‘tong Sa’yo, and we’re really excited to be able to share this song to a wider audience now that the music video is also gonna be released.”

When asked about the story behind Sa’yo, Sarkie said that the song was borne out of a chat with a friend.

“Actually, yung Sa’yo hindi ko nagawa out of a personal experience. I was inspired by a friend’s story and wrote about it. The lyrics are like a conversation between two people who have feelings for each other but who cannot decide if they really want to be together.”

For the concept of the music video, the band initially wanted a simple performance video. “But while we were brainstorming, the idea popped up that instead of doing a storyline or narrative, we would rather tell the story through a dance. Then we asked help from our friends, the Sexbomb Girls. They agreed to do it and we’re very thankful to them, especially to Joyce for doing the lead part and to Aira for the beautiful choreography.”

“Our director for the music video is Kid Guevarra (guitarist of Tanya Markova/Dhruva Tara),” Sarkie further related about the making of the video. “Sobrang relaxed lang and enjoyable because the bulk of the work went to the dancers (laughs). There weren’t much delays while we were doing the shoot. Sobrang nakakadala din nung mismong dance routine. Pati kami muntik na sumayaw...ulit (laughs).”

How is this any different from the first two music videos (Bumalik Ka Na Sa’kin and Meron Nang Iba)? “The main difference is dance routine. And the main challenge, of course, is how to convey the message of the song through dance. We just wanted to achieve a simple video with a concept that we had never done.”

Silent Sanctuary’s Monodramatic is now available in music stores nationwide. It is also available for download on iTunes and Spinnr.ph.
